Traditional Family versus Military Family   Family units have a unique bond that holds everything together. This unit is a proverbial “one stop shop” for one’s emotional needs. This unique support system however is fragile and requires a balance to assure that it is sustained and built on the best possible foundation. Due to the high demands of the military on those that serve, this unique family unit must endure more than the traditional family in order to maintain its’ effectiveness and cohesion. By no means is this writer insisting that the traditional family is without hardship and challenges. There are always going to be influences that add stress and jeopardize the integrity of one’s family. The bread winner may lose his or her job, or takes a pay loss. A child may need an expensive procedure like braces to have that exceptional smile that we wish so hard for them, to have. Any one of the members can suddenly become ill, placing undue stress on the entire unit. The amount of difficulty that any family must overcome should never be downplayed. Our families of those that serve in the military have these same struggles, which add weight to the very fibers that hold them together. In most respects they are one and the same. The two share many of the same struggles and challenges that can tear a family apart as well as build tremendous bonds when the obstacle has been overcome. For those that serve in our military the extent of pressure on their families goes beyond that of an average traditional one. There is never a period in their lives that lasts more than a few months that can provide certainty in their lives. There family can just begin to fall into a routine and establish friends in a neighborhood, when all the sudden they are forced to uproot all that they have, from all that they know, and move to a new place.
