It also puts limits on God’s power. According to the definition of a theistic God, God is omnipotent. If God is all powerful then he should be able to command whatever he wants but by saying that morality is independent of God would mean that God is subject to the rules of morality (Fisher, 359). All in all the main issues with the Autonomy Thesis are that it would only be reasonable if one was not considering the existence of a theistic
One goes by the name “Cartesian spiral”. This suggests that the distinct and clear perception that proves Gods existence is different from the other perceptions. The Cartesian spiral is based on a mathematical equation, as “2+2=4” is clear and distinct, but a judgement and that is open to error. While the clear and distinct perception of Gods existence is just an idea and with no judgement attached. We know clear and distinct perceptions independently by God, and his existence provides us with a certainty we might not possess otherwise.
For this reason, people who agree with Calvin in believing in predestination often find it difficult to understand why miracles aren’t common occurrences. However, as Swinburne suggests, if miracles were a frequent occurrence, people would live in confusion, not knowing whether to trust that laws such as gravity would remain constant. Swinburne also observes that if God were to interact frequently, humans would become expectant and perhaps take less active roles in society and would, for example, be less likely to find the cure for cancer. Another possible reason for miracles appearing to be sparse and selective is hinted at in Irenaean theodicy, which suggests that people suffer on earth and in life in
They say that God does not exist in an objective and real sense; they do not think he is a real human entity existing in the world. For the Deist, God is the creator of the universe. God really exists but he does not and cannot intervene within the world. And lastly, for the Atheist, there is no God to bring about any kind of miracle. I myself am an Atheist, and therefore in my opinion believe miracles are impossible as all miracles are by, definition impossible if they claim to be the action of a deity.
Free will means that God does not have any set destiny for us. If God were to create free agents that could only choose good, that would mean that God laid out a destiny of good for all agents. Even though God is omniscient, free will is still possible because while God may know the choices we are going to make, he is not the cause of them. Since God does not choose or cause our destiny, we still have free will. In response to the option in which God creates a world with free agents and no evil, a world with no evil would mean a world with no good, so it would be impossible for God to create a free agents that only choose good, since evil does not exist.
If God is all powerful, then he would assume the most powerful state. So, for instance, he wouldn’t age because that would be a weakness of god. Anselm argues that in order to assume the most powerful state of being, a thing must exist. The argument centred on the thought that a thing that exists is greater than a thing that does not. Things that exist purely in our minds cannot effect the real world unless they work through us, thus making us more powerful.
He was not sure we could even assume a creator, let alone choose one religions God to be the true one. Hume uses his own analogy of a pair of scales. If one end is hidden from view and the end we can see is clearly outweighed by the other one. We know how much weight is in the end of the one we can see, a kilogram for example, but all we know about the other side is that it is heavier than a kilogram. We cannot claim or infer with any confidence that we know the weight on the hidden side.
In the Whether God Exists article, Mr. Aquinas states, “The existence of God can be proved in five ways”(1). One argument that Aquinas makes that I believe is a very strong argument, and seems very logical, is the one in which he states that everything is taken from “possibility and necessity.” He goes on to explain God must exist, because if nothing had ever existed in the world, then it would not be possible for anything to exist today. He then goes on to explain, “If at one time nothing was in existence, it would have been impossible for anything to have begun to exist.” Furthermore, he then concludes that God must then be the cause of the existence of everything. Although this argument might seem a little weak to some people, I personally believe that it does make a whole lot of sense. Furthermore, in the article, Aquinas states that if God exists, he is considered to be “Infinite Goodness.” It also states, “If god existed then there would be no evil discoverable, but there is evil in the world.” I believe that this is a good argument made against God because it is so true.
There are no tests or actual empirical evidence for God’s existence. Anthony Flew stated that claims of God’s existence are empirically empty; this is because for the person who makes them, they cannot be falsified as there is also no empirical evidence disproving God’s existence. Yet some people may argue that God’s existence can be proven through the order and design of the universe. For example William Paley believed that every contrivance found in a watch is also found in nature; a watch has several complex features which work together perfectly to function, anything that has such features must have a designed; ergo it must have a designer. The universe is like the watch in the sense that it has complex features that work together perfectly; therefore the universe like the watch must have been designed.
Catholic people think that if you believe in God miracles seem more obvious to you and if you deny and test the existence of God then it will be harder to see the miracles happen. If God really is behind all of the natural laws, he is not restricted by them therefore He is allowed to violate them from time to time. This also contradicts the fact that God is omnibenevolant and defeats the saying that ‘all humans are equal’. There are a lot of problems with using miracles to prove Gods existence, some say that one person’s miracle is not one to another person, we have some sort of scientific explanations to miracles that happened in the bible, so in the future we could have explanations to miracles that
