Gracie Valls Mr. Fox English V – Period 3 22 October 2012 Power to the Women Title IX is an important constitutional amendment stating that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” In other words, Title IX was a way for females to gain more rights in education and extracurricular programs. Following the addition of the amendment in 1972, society demonstrates a tremendous change between the rights of females and males. The other aspect to this amendment was that women should have equal rights as men in the scholastic world. Some may say that girls who play sports do better in school. Why? Sports help females learn to discipline themselves and gain self confidence. Both sports and education parallel themselves in the process of increasing rights for women. Sports teach young women to set goals and try their hardest to achieve them (WHE 1). President Obama explains that the Title IX amendment can be a “springboard for success” for all women in the United States. Every parent wants to see their children doing well and living up to their fullest potential. By playing sports, young girls gain self-confidence and acquire a much better outlook on life. Girls who play sports are less likely to become depressed than their non-athletic peers and also have remarkable health. Title IX has helped young women discover their passions and follow their dreams (WHE 1). Since Title IX has been added, opportunities for female sports have greatly impacted their classroom life. Sports are major hobbies and media icons for the United States today. Participating in sporting events is an excellent way for women to show how they are just as capable and confident as men. Valerie Bonnette, and many other females around the United States, experienced discrimination in terms of sports and education before the amendment of Title IX. In order to keep progressing with this situation, females need to show the world that they are worth fighting for. Just like these reformers, women around the United States need to take action and prove that they are just as capable as men to exceed in the worlds of athletics and
