Compare and Contrast "Tilted Arc" and "The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial" After reading a few articles and watching the videos, the two topics actually were easier for me to understand. Reading the book was a brief summary, but then I started to watch videos and other short articles, and it all started to come together. Comparing and contrasting two slightly different situations, but both have a major impact on society. Richard Serra’s, “Tilted Arc” and Maya Lin’s “Vietnam Veterans Memorial” were and still are very popular. On the other hand, both were very controversial. Richard’s piece of sculpture was in the middle of the Federal Plaza in New York City. His sculpture was a curved wall of raw steel. The sculpture was 120 feet long and 12 feet high, which cut the plaza in half. In the article it said that Serra thought,” The viewer becomes aware of himself and of his movement through the plaza. As he moves, the sculpture changes. Contraction and expansion of the sculpture result from the viewer's movement. Step by step the perception not only of the sculpture but also of the entire environment changes.” According to the article, it states that the steel wall was worth $175,000. Judge Edward Re wanted to remove the wall, so he started a campaign. A few years into the campaign, the regional administrator wanted to relocate it. After adding up the costs for relocation, it came to about $75,000. Richard did not want to take part in this, he said this sculpture was site specific, and if they did too remove it, he would remove his name from it. This proceeded to the court, just like Maya’s situation. The reason why they wanted to remove it was because it supposedly interfered with the public space, and thought it attracted graffiti, and terrorists. In March 15th 1989 they removed his sculpture and scrapped the metal. Both artists didn't have much of a say so in their wishes.
