The Statue of Liberty A large monumental statue symbolizing liberty on Liberty Island in New York Bay. The Statue of Liberty, officially named the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, sits on the 12-acre Liberty Island in New York Harbor. This national monument, has represented freedom from tyranny, financial hardship and suffering for many immigrants since the late 1800s. History The French gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a gift to mark the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was a joint effort between America and France and it was agreed upon that the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly here in the United States. The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885 on board of the French frigate "Isere" which transported the Statue of Liberty from France to the United States. In transit, the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. It took 4 months’ time to reassemble the statue. On October 28th 1886, the dedication of the Statue of Liberty took place in front of thousands of spectators. The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, is a hollow colossus composed of thinly pounded copper sheets over a steel framework, and it was designed in Paris by the French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, in collaboration with the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who was responsible for its frame. Bartholdi used his mother, Charlotte, as the model for the most recognized statue in the world. This was first discovered in 1876, when Bartholdi invited French Senator Jules Bozerian to his box at the opera.
