The Day They Set Out Response Brandon Moreira In the short story “The Day They Set Out” by Beverly Harris, the protagonist, Jean is stuck in a life in which she does the same predictable routine. This makes her feel empty inside, and that she needs to try something new. The causes for her emptiness and difficulties are that, because of her lack of social skills, she has almost no friends. Her husband, Ross does not love her anymore, so he looks at other women to satisfy himself. Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job.
At his family home, we realise that his only friends were characters in books, showing he had a very lonely upbringing. This makes the reader feel sympathy as he regains his imagination and ability to feel emotion. However, when we meet his fiancé, we lose our sympathy as he had a chance to be happy, and missed it due to his obsession with wealth and possessions. Carl is often shifted to his Auntie Beryl’s house which she doesn’t treat him with respect or kindness. “Who would love you if your own mother doesn’t?” Therefore Carl has a very low self-esteem and he feels very abandoned and lonely. He also feels that his mother did not love him and that he is in her way of doing what she wants to do. He is a very sad, lonely and confused fifteen year old teenager. This could be a struggle because some parents live their dreams through their children and that pressures them to do more than they are capable of doing.
