Herodotus and Sima Qian were both great historians and researchers, but the fact that they were centuries apart and in two different regions makes the book even more interesting as Thomas R. Martin puts together in one source the lives and works of these two intellectual men. Herodotus, the first proclaimed great historian, was from the regions of Greece, specifically from the city of Halicarnassus. Halicarnassus is the site of modern day Turkey. It was located in a short distance of the sea which allowed it to become a city of trade through the accessibility of waterways. Considering the fact that Halicarnassus was located by the sea made it a central location for diverse population mixtures.
The Phoenician’s homeland of Phoenicia was a thin strip of land stretching along the Syrian coast; it was only 160 miles long and about 20 miles wide.# In order to expand they had no other choice but to turn towards the sea. This allowed them to excel in the arts of shipbuilding and navigation. The brave Phoenicians would often sail up and down the Mediterranean Sea. They were the founders of many colonies, the greatest being the city of Carthage, which would later go on to defeat the mighty Roman Empire. They sailed as far east as the British Isles and to Spain where they founded the mineral-rich city of Cádiz on the southern coast, and as far south as South Africa.# The advantage of sailing lead the Phoenicians to travel to other lands.
The Zwin canal was Brugge’s lifeline, being that it was Brugge’s connection to the sea. Up until 1500 the Zwin had lead to a boom in Brugge’s economic status, boasting a population in Brugge of over 200,000 individuals. This was double of London and made Brugge a widely renowned city. However, once the Zwin canal silted up and became inaccessible for travel, it created a domino effect (Lonely Planet). To silt up is a simple

Indian ocean trade For the better part of the seven hundred years these merchant ships were to free to sail to any sea šwithout the need for pretection from the navy. Many more people participated in the indian ocean trade than the silk road mainly even though Europeans didn’t enter the trading in the Indian ocean. People would act as middle men where they would buy stuff to sell it more than they bought it for and even buy new items to sell later. Another factor about why the continuities of the trade lasted is that with seaborne trade you can bring large cargo of goods such as cotton cloths or timbers that you normaly cant strap on a camel or any other domestic animals at that time. Not just products made their way across the eastern hemisphere but also ideas and new technology thanks to the indian ocean trade.
Many have tried since then but all have failed, such as the Spanish armada in 1588. As we are surrounded by water a strong navy has always been crucial throughout the ages. At the time of the British Empire we had a navy that was at least twice the size of anybody else’s. We are a small island and we cannot feed our population with what we grow in this country so we relied upon supplies from overseas. We had a stable political system which was a huge advantage, because in other countries they still had monarchy and if one person disagreed with the king the he would be beheaded.
Access to commodities such as fabrics, spices, and gold motivated a European quest for a faster means to reach South Asia. It was this search that led the Portuguese down the coast of West Africa to Sierra Leone in 1460. Due to several technological and cultural advantages, Portugal dominated world trade for nearly 200 years, from the fifteenth to the sixteenth centuries. While, in the fifteenth century, the rest of Europe was decimated by the Black Plague, Portugal was protected by its physical isolation. Additionally, Portugal had an unusually strong national identity, due to its natural geographic borders, allowing the pooling of the considerable economic resources necessary to fund these ambitious explorations.
#2- Close link with the classical Past: Italy in that time located on the coast so that the culture and history were affluent in a long time. Moreover, several wealthy commercial centers, focused on overseas and the classical knowledge which surrounded The Italians also reminded them about the past. #3- Most aristocrats lived in urban palaces rather that rural castles. Urban aristocrats begin to engage in mercantile enterprises while merchants begin to imitate aristocratic manners. Then the two eventually become virtually indistinguishable 3.

Las Vegas has shown impressive job growth in a major city with a low state and local tax burden. It also has spawned significant public and private sector investment. Las Vegas also has done a lot to revitalize the rest of the city. But then we can look at Atlantic City, NJ and say the exact opposite. It has been said that prior to casinos, Atlantic City used to be the slum by the sea, and now it is the slum by the sea with casinos.
