Wealthier societies have exceptional educational services which include better teachers, utilities, and curriculum, whereas poorer societies just get by on the bare minimum. Children who do not become well educated will not succeed as far as they may like to because their knowledge and qualifications will limit them. Payne stated that students should learn the “hidden rules” of the middle class from their educators so that they have another set of rules to use if they choose to do so. Impoverished students, compared to students of middle or upper class, often have a lack of proper funding, thus, a lack of appropriate resources to use in their education. Due to this, they are often unprepared for school, not having the money to purchase books and other educational tools. Both authors realize this, but argue that the responsibility lies on different shoulders. Payne states that impoverished students face inequality at school, insinuating that the school should be responsible for helping to provide for these students so that they can have a better education.
The education reform did seek to expand democratic ideal but not up to its full potential. William G. McGuffey supported the ideal that all people deserve to get their own education and become more independent thinkers. It was very hard for poor people to afford going to school when the cost to attend school was so high. The poor had to work on getting food on the table at that time not worried on giving their children a public education. In that time education was very limited to everybody but those who were rich.
The consequence for the lack of critical thinking in decision making has been revealed through recent corporate scandals such as Enron (Braun, 2004, p. 232). To improve these skills, business leaders believe that more focus be made on teaching critical think in business schools over anything else (Braun, 2004, p. 232). While many professionals agree with this, I believe, rather than waiting until college, these skills and tools can be developed at a young age by shifting from the more traditional passive teaching methods to a more active teaching style. Traditionally, passive teaching has been the most common approach used by professors. This method usually involves professors delivering lectures to students with little to no opportunity for student input through “discussion or experiential exercises” (Michel, Cater, & Varela, 2009, p. 400).

Improving and supporting education is very important for a country’s development. Kaplan wrote, “Unless the middle classes are enlarged and institutions modernized, the wave of democratization will not be consolidated.” The government needs to be ruled by the majority of the people. The middle class is the majority.

While receiving welfare, one must meet, or not meet, a certain income criteria. If the income earned is more than what has been outlined by the state, the recipient of the benefits no longer is eligible to receive the benefits. This forces a person to not take the extra hours at work so they can stay below the poverty level to continue to reap the benefits of the system. Some people abuse the system, not all though, and this makes things like stipulations on the rationing of benefits unfair and difficult to implement. poverty Poverty in the United States is getting worse each day and not enough is getting done about it. The readings from “Babies and Benefits” by Sheila Holbrook-White, the article on poverty by Michael J. Paquette, and “Keeping Women And Children Last” by Ruth Sidel made me view the issues of poverty in a different way. I never realised what kind of people were living in poverty, and the true reasons why they are there. What amazes me the most is how much these people need help, and how little the government is doing to help them. The government should set up work programs for these people to help them get better jobs and make enough money to survive.
It makes a great impact in their lives, and it helps them out in a lot. In to what they were looking for, or basically, be better. Be successful and show others many new things. How to make this country a better place, and a better economy. Back in the old days they let immigrants come into America with no problem too.
