"The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns, decent law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose." (James Earl Jones, Online). Banning all or some weapons is not the solution to decreasing the increased gun related violence in the United States. Having stricter gun laws and measures could keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, people with mental illness, or individuals with bad intentions. Limiting the number of bullets a magazine can hold will not keep these types of individuals from committing a crime. The second amendment states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (U.S. Const., amend. II.). Opponents of gun laws say that any laws that are used by the government to control or regulate gun control is infringing on their second amendment right (Issues & Controversies, Online). A gun control initiative to be focused on would be stricter gun control laws and measures which would help crack down on gun crimes while encouraging responsible gun ownership and the use among civilians. However, if there was a waiting period in all states it could prevent a person from committing a crime if the firearm was purchased from a Federal Firearm Licensed dealer. A waiting period imposes a time period of several days or longer during which tempers can cool, so that by the time the gun is obtained, the motivation to kill will have evaporated (Jacobs, 2004, p. 3). The state of Texas currently does not have a waiting period when purchasing handguns, shotguns, or rifles. If mental health assessments or release of medical records would have been available during a background check it could have raised flags regarding any mental status, which could have prevented some individuals that have committed crimes from acquiring weapons or
