The Outsiders Q: Are the greasers and socs essentially the same, or irrevocably different? The novel The Outsiders, published 1967, is written by S.E. Hinton, who portrays the greasers and socs to be in some ways different, but in many more ways alike. The two groups have many inner and outer differences such as hobbies, values, emotions, clothing and jobs. Although the greasers and socs have many differences, they also share many similarities such as pressure to be confined into their groups, their hate for one another and poor parenting on both sides. Hinton also reveals the humanity between both groups and gives hope that someday they will put aside their differences. The greasers and socs have many differences on the surface that separate them. Socs are the West side rich kids whilst greasers are the East side middle and lower class poor kids. Socs wear conservative madras shirts and drive Corvair cars, whereas greasers’ wear jackets with long combed back greasy hair and own cheap vehicles, if any. Indication of greasers pride for their hair is seen when Pony says: ‘Our hair labelled us greasers.’ ‘The one thing we were proud of. Maybe we couldn’t have Corvairs or madras shirts, but we could have hair.’ (p.55). The two groups also have different tastes in music which is seen in the quote ‘They (the Socs) liked the Beatles and thought Elvis Presley was out, and we thought The Beetles were rank and that Elvis was tough.’ (p.32). It is apparent that the greasers and socs are after all somewhat different on the outside. In addition to their outer differences, the Socs and greasers also have much inner dissimilarity that separates them from each other. The most significant difference between the groups is that greasers have a different set of values and are more emotive than socs, which is indicated when Cherry says to Ponyboy- ‘You greasers have a
