An essay on “The lady with the little dog” by Anton Chekhov. The short story ‘The lady with the little dog’ by Anton Chekhov is a panoply of the writer’s expertise in propounding the much cherished theme of love and marriage through a discreet analysis. In fact, this is a gripping story with vivid and electrifying episodes of the said thematic concerns. The writer in his master craftsmanship and consummate skill lays foundation to explore the realm of relationships within the confines of a Russian setting wherein lies so many social stigmas against a healthy bond between a man and a woman. So he infuses a new spirit to the old bones of love and gives a good account of its attendant issues in order to revivify the glory of it in the eyes of the readership. It transpires that the verbal artistry of the writer takes a real turn within the components of the short story in such a way that the writer under the generous impulse of his ingenuity, gains a penetrative insight into his contemporary society. So there is no gainsaying that this short story encompasses the essence of love premised on the writer’s unreserved concern towards it. Indeed, it will be a worthwhile effort if we collect our wits to do a comprehensive analysis on it. The author in his close observation paints everything in a broad canvas in many hues for us to view. Through his nonpareil prism of imagination , he attaches a great significance to colours which stand for various notions. The protagonist Dmitri’s hair which is graying ,is in stark contrast with the romantic shade of ‘golden streak from the moon’. What stands out from this is in assonance with Dmitri’s aging self. So it is patent that the magnetic pull of romanticism is marred with one’s aging. Further, the “Soft warm lilac hue” of the “Yalta”sea gives an added dimension to this portraiture of colours by intensifying the outlook of love.
