In the passage “Geraldo No Last Name” by Sandra Cisneros, the author uses diction and sentence structure to achieve the effect of a personal, realistic story. First off, Cisneros uses simple, informal diction to make her story personal and realistic. For example, when the author describes Geraldo and what happens to him, she uses simple words such as “Pretty”, “Brazer” and even “Wetback”. The author also uses collegial phrases such as “That’s right” and “Ain’t it a shame”, plus she repeats the name Geraldo several times. This shows how the author’s use of diction creates a personal realistic story because the narration speech effects real life language. The narrator specks like real people actually talk when they are telling a story. As a result, the story becomes real to the reader. The author also repeats the name Geraldo to make the story personal. This humanizes the charter for the reader so so readers feel sympathy for his death. Secondly, Cisneros uses short direct sentences and sentence fragments to make the story personal and realistic. For instance, when the story begins, the author explains how Marin meet Geraldo, “She meet him at a dance, pretty to, and …”. This demonstrates how the author use of simple direct sentences and sentence fragments creates a realistic personal story because the sentences mimic real life speech patterns. As a result, the author creates a realistic conversational story. The use of fragments makes the story personal because the author uses them to call attention to Geraldo and details around him.
