MaryBeth Breihan Mr. Bettlach American History Period 5 11/6/11 The Five People You Meet in Heaven The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom starts off at the end of the book. It explains the life of the Ruby Pier’s maintained worker, Eddie. The book explains how he died and his life in heaven. He meets five different people in heaven. Each one affected his life in some way he just never knew it. They all help to teach him a lesson. He learns from all of them and moves on from the grudges he held while on earth. The first person that Eddie met was the Blue Man. Eddie did not personally know who the Blue Man was but he found out that he caused him to die. The Blue Man told the story of how he died from Eddie’s point of view and his. Eddie ran out into the middle of the street causing the Blue Man to crash and die. There was a reason that the Blue Man died over Eddie and Eddie ended up spending his 8th birthday at the Blue Man’s funeral. The Blue Man told Eddie “That strangers are just family you have yet to come to know” (49). Moving on to his next person all Eddie sees is his dog tags, helmet and rifle back from when he was in the war. He heard a voice up in a tree and climbs up it to find his captain. They remembered times from back when they were in the war together. Eddie, Smitty, Morton and the captain blew up the mine from where they were held prisoners. Eddie thought he saw a child in the barn that they were also burning. He wanted to go save but got shot in the leg. He found out from the captain that he was the one who shot his leg. The captain had to make a choice either have him burned in the fire or get a leg wound. The captain ended up dying by being blown up from a land mine. The captain teaches him that sacrifice is a part of life and that he did not die for nothing (93). Eddie meets a waitress who worked at the Seashore Grille. He
