Narrative essay The Equinox at Chichen Itza is very unique phenomenon Chichen Itza is located in Mexico, in Maya, 75 miles east from Merida, the /capital of the State of Yucatan. It also 2 hours away from Cancun which civilization built it?. The Sacred city of the Itza, called Chichen Itza, was built by Mayans. Mayans were an ancient civilization of southern Mexico and the Central American countries of El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala. They were also called the Itza, in English, mean “At the mount of well of the Itza” which roughly describes where it was? Mayans called it this as the location was very close to water wells, and one was called The Sacred well. Chichen Itza is roughly six square miles, and is considered one of the most important parts of the Maya culture, also was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Some of the building that was built is called: The Red House, The house of the Deer, The Mummery and its Annex, The Church, The Akab Dzib, The Templeof the three Lintels, The Observatory, Kukulcan’s Pyramid, The Temple of Warriors, The Ball Curt, The Group of The Thousand Columns, and The House of Phalli. The most well know structure at Chichen Itza is the Temple of Kukulkan, which is also called El Castillo. The Pyramid is made out of limestone blocks and towers 75 feet above the ground with a base of about 181 feet on each of its four sides. There are nine platforms on each side of the pyramid and four stairways which lead to the Upper Temple. It is thought that the upper temple was used to conduct the most important ceremonies by the Mayan rulers. The construction of El Castillo, demonstrates the Mayan’s knowledge and use of astronomy. It is believed that the Mayans used various shadows and designs formed by the sun shining on the Pyramid to signal the beginning and ending of the harvest season. The equinox
