By Katherine Board 2a) Explain and illustrate the difference between power and authority. Power in a political sense is the ability to get others to do things they might not want to do. This is done in two ways; the first is persuasion. With this people cooperate with you freely, willingly and of their own accord, on the basis of reasons that they accept. The second is coercion, this involves the use of threats sanctions and force. For example, the state threatens us with fines, prison or worse if we do not obey their laws. You can see then that you have power is easy, if you are feared or have something desirable to others such as money then you will have power over people. Authority is more than just power. People obey you because you have money or because they are scared of you but because they believe you are normative authority. There are two senses of authority; theoretical and practical. Theoretical authority is being an authority or expert on a particular topic, if for example you needed to build a bridge, you would go to an engineer for advice. You listen to him and trust what he says. He has theoretical authority over you. Practical authority is to have legitimate power and be respected for it. It is the ability to lead, control and in essence take care of other people. Some philosophers such as Hobbes believe that if you are obeyed because you are feared, you do not have authority, only power.
