Good afternoon teachers and students. The best prose fiction does challenge the way we see the world as well as the way we see others and the way we see our selves. Immersing ourselves in Mark Haddon’s The curious incident of the dog in the night time inevitably leads us to reevaluate many of our perceptions and challenge some of our preconceptions. Haddon’s use of first person narration as well as the way he uses characterization to explore ideas abut logic and perspective, love and truth, and communication encourage us to deeply feel this way. One main idea that Haddon explores is that one perspective on life, such as a logical view, can cause conflicts between an individual, himself and the wider community, often involving intense emotion in making their life decisions. This idea is mainly portrayed through the protagonist Christopher who throughout the novel believes that all questions in life can be answered logically which causes him to have numerous conflicts with others and within himself. Initially, Christopher’s view on life is depicted in the simile “prime numbers are like life” because “they are very logical but you can never work out the rules.” This emphasizes Chris’ belief that he doesn’t understand life as it doesn’t have set rules. Furthermore, this is supported in another simile from Chris in “I sometimes think of my mind as a machine” which compares his views on life with how a machine would which would be; totally logical and lacking emotion. As well as this, his logical perspectives cause him to have disagreements with others which is depicted in his father’s colloquialism “keep your nose out of other people’s business,” which highlights Chris’ desire to understand and quantify everything, even if it isn’t related to him.
