Analysis Essay Just like any tool in a writer’s arsenal, characterization has the power to affect the meaning of any story. As a reader, I know full well the power characterization holds, and more specifically, the power it hold in the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. How the writer characterizes the characters in the Scarlet Ibis enforces the meaning of the theme, and what the story communicate. Doodle was portrayed in the story as a tenacious dreamer. He didn’t believe he could walk, he believed what the doctors and his family members said, yet when he was presented with the idea of training to walk, he hesitated, but later persisted.

Through a close study of the narrative structure, relationships and detective fiction the reader will gain a better understanding of the distinctive elements of this novel. In the book “Curious” Mark Haddon has used an interesting narrative structure to convey the effects of Christopher Boone as the distinctive narrator. A distinctive feature we see in “Curious” is the use of Narrative Digressions. Haddon has structured this novel so that about every second chapter we see a Narrative digression which throws the story into pause and in these narrative digressions he goes into unneeded subjects such as Christopher listing all of his behavioural problems Christopher says “I used to think mother and father would get divorced” this digression had followed Ed Boone stating that he wanted to leave Swindon and live somewhere else. Christopher stating all these behavioural problems shows us his thought pattern.
This causes him to make decisions that the boy views as wrong in order to survive. Exile can also be enriching. Sophocles showed this in his Oedipus trilogy. Oedipus’ exile forced him to examine his life and therefore move past his mistakes and hope for the future. The father and sons’ experience is much the same.
The novel the Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-time is written from Christopher Boones’ point of view. Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome, throughout the novel you soon see his logic, brilliance, and hypersensitivity explained and illustrated. This may seem like I am contradicting myself however Christopher’s actions demonstrate, his different traits. Christopher thinks he uses logic in every decision, however looking at some of his actions they are in fact irrational.
Hindering it? Explain using concepts from the text. Jim’s negative self-concept is hindering the interaction between Jim and his father. Jim’s view of himself is being influenced by his father’s view of him to an extent. Because both perceive Jim’s skills so differently, a line of communication must be opened.
In the story, Christopher has to know everthing he will be doing before the day begins. He wants to create a mental timetable that must be followed. The reader can recognize how important routine is for Christopher because of his need for a timetable. Without a timetable, Christopher feels lost and confused; he does not know what to do or where to go.
He sought to give advice as a peer rather than a parent, which shows his devotion to his son because he is not acting like the dominant father he very clearly is. Chesterfield uses his style of diction mainly for the purpose of showing dominance. He constantly belittles his son and shows his supremacy. The different types of diction used throughout the letter all show in some way the virtues that Lord Chesterfield is imposing on his
Although Nick Carraway tries to be a forward and reliable narrator, he has many biases and tries too hard to defend his credibility. He is uninterested in others’ affairs and tries to seem like a saintly figure, claiming he will not criticize anyone. He is too proud in the fact that he is honest, and seems to repeat this fact often throughout the novel, as if he is trying to corroborate his honesty with the reader and maybe even himself. He also lies to Jordan about not thinking he is honest, even when he clearly had this exact notion in his head. Nick makes a respectable effort to be a trustworthy narrator; however he seems to guard his reputation as he tells the story.
