Government Research Paper There are many events that cause a shock, a feeling of uncertainty, and fear and during the history of the United States there have been many of them. During our lifetimes Americans have witnessed many of these events like September 11, the Cuban missile crisis, and Pearl Harbor. During these events the minds of the American people were changed, and always they wanted to find a way to stop it from happening again. After September 11 the PATRIOT act was passed, after the Cuban missile crisis we got the missiles away from the area, and after Pearl Harbor we interred the Japanese in camps. This was the beginning of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In response to this embargo the Japanese attacked the Dutch East Indies an oil rich territory. After the embargo was enforced Japan started planning their attack on the United States. Even though an attack was being planned for months, it wasn’t until November 5, 1941 a plan for attack was approved, even though both sides haven’t fought yet Japan was at war. Tensions rose after November 26, 1941 when Secretary of State Cordell Hull gave a final proposal to Japan to withdraw troops from China, and French Indochina. The day before the proposal was written the Presidential Cabinet had a meeting to discuss the possibility of a surprise attack. Before receiving this note Japan had already sent their strike force to attack Pearl Harbor and a week after receiving this proposal Japanese Emperor Hirohito had approved the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt called the event of December 6, 1941 a day that shall live in infamy. Pearl Harbor has been attacked in the first attack on United States soil since the war of 1812. In this surprise attack over 1,200 American military was killed and our Navy has been crippled, another attack like this wouldn’t be seen until September 11. As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor they also attacked the Philippines, and Wake Island. As the United States was still recovering from the attack on Pearl Harbor, Emperor Hirohito declared war on the United States and the British Empire. The next day president Roosevelt gave his famous speech when he recited the famous line that December 7th “A date which will live in infamy”. President Roosevelt gave this speech in front of a joint congress session only a day after the attack; this speech was broadcasted live and was listened to by 81% of American homes. Only 38 minutes after he had finished the speech the United States had declared war on Japan in a near unanimous decision with only one vote being against it that vote belonging to Montana Representative Jeanette Rankin who also voted against World War 1.
