However he had a tragic flaw but him confessing leads up to his tragic death that causes the audience to feel sympathy. John Proctor’s downfall is initiated by a human flaw which was his inability to control and resist his desire. When his wife Elizabeth got sick began to catch feelings for Abigail. Communism is a form of socialism that abolishes private ownership. In 1957 Arthur Miller wrote a play called The Crucible which takes place in the Puritan town of Salem with the suspicions of witchcraft in the late 1600's based on the widespread fear of communism during the Red Scare. In both cases, there was little evidence that proved these people guilty. They were taken and jailed based on what people thought they had seen or heard. Although both incidents occurred almost 260 years apart, they are directly associated because of the similarities in people, causes and effects.
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, first publish in 1953, is about the Salem witch trials that took place In Massachusetts in 1692. John Proctor faces a life changing decision either tell the truth about his adultery and witchcraft or continue to hide the truth. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor develops from an immoral coward to a morally brave man by telling the truth even though he ends up dead. This essay will show how John Proctor is an immoral coward at the beginning of the play, how he begins to become morally stronger to save his wife, Elizabeth, and then how he becomes a morally brave man through the conflict with Danforth and the court. John Proctor is an immoral coward at the beginning of the play.
Gabriel had a very sinful past, and he never forgave himself for the things he did wrong that he regrets. When Gabriel’s sister says, “I know you thinking at the bottom of your heart that if you just make her, her and her bastard boy, pay enough for her sin, your son won’t have to pay for yours. But I ain’t going to let you do that. You done made enough folks pay for sin, it’s time you started paying,” she makes it known to the reader that Gabriel has sins that he has not “paid for”. Because of this, he embodies an angry character, which he then takes out on the people around him, including his loved ones.
Because their relationship is an affair, they cannot see each other in the way they want to very often and especially not while other people are around. They are not married to each other which make their relationship very wrong in that community and time- more so wrong than it would be now. John Procter understands that their secret must be kept, but finished, but Abigail doesn’t care that they were caught once and could be caught again. She just wants their relationship back and says, “Oh, I marvel, how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be-” (miller 22) Abigail then comes to claim that Elizabeth, john’s wife, is “Blackening me (her) name in the village!” She is telling lies about me (her)!” (Miller 22) but he just gets angry at himself because it’s true, and threatens to whip her for talking about his wife that
I would have to agree with that because I am actually going through my parents getting a divorce and when I found out I didn’t want to believe it at all I didn’t want to see my parents split up it just wasn’t right to me. It really caused me to feel depression and I felt like I was the blame for their divorce. In this description the reader can deduce that Wilson has suspicions that his wife is up to something and the cold reality is setting in on him. With Wilson realizing this he must have been questioning whether he was a good husband or not, causing him to feel queasy with the notion that his wife is cheating on him. Because he found out, he knows he must get out before she leaves him, “I’ve been here too long. I want to get away. My wife and I want to go West” (123).
John’s emotions for Abigail gradually changed because he realized what he was doing was wrong and he knew it was guilt-ridden. John’s conscience and the guilt he had about the affair affected him because he is a married man and really loves his wife. In act 2 of The Crucible John
Here, Kingshaw’s mother is trying to treat both the boys with equal respect.“I shall not make a favourite of my own child”, which is conveyed to the reader constantly as throughout the novel as her respect for her own child declines as her feelings for Mr Hooper increases . Hooper’s hatred for his own Mother peaks when he thinks to himself “He wished she were dead instead of his father” The phrase, “wish she were dead” conveys the fact that Kingshaw’s hatred for her is an extreme one, this is because he feels that he has been forgotten in place of Mr Hooper and Hooper . Also, the fact that he wants her to be replaced by his father, a person who he has never thoroughly met emphasises that he hates his mother who is suppose to be loving and caring more than anyone he has known. A point that is later made when in his mind Kingshaw exclaims, “he hated her more than Hooper now”. This exaggerates his hate for his mother even more as Hooper is Kingshaw’s worst enemy, this suggests that Kingshaw’s worst relationship is with his mother, potentially implying she is the reason for his death.
