As an elderly man nears death, his daughter is persuaded to abandon her people’s tradition of looking after their “own”, because she cannot bear to watch her father die. The setting encourages the reader to think about the writer’s ideas, because the heat and drought reflect the deterioration of the old man’s life. He is a good man whose recollections show a full and significant existence. She takes him to a nursing home, but is sent away because of the colour of her father’s skin. His poor treatment there is more shocking because he has been drawn as a character who had, “worked hard” and ”owed nothing to any man.” Mrs Edwards, the daughter, is confused at first by the nun’s reaction to seeing her.
Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job. In the story, there are many reasons contributing to Jean’s feeling of emptiness and difficulty in her life. To begin, her husband, Ross feels as though he has married beneath himself, and he does not love her anymore. Their marriage was most likely caused by Jean getting pregnant with their son, which made Ross feel like he had to marry her out of force. In the story, Ross specifically tells their son, Kevin that he should try not to marry beneath himself because he will end up stuck in the same situation as him.
Before their family tragedy occurs, none of them could ever think about changing mentality or lifestyle, therefore all characters are psychologically unready to survive their loss. Moreover, this event makes some of the characters starting to think differently. Nandana is one of the main characters who can also be considered a hero. She initially lives an illusion when she refuses to accept that her parents died. As she refuses to talk to anybody, the child created her own imaginary world being unwilling to look at the reality: “Why couldn't he understand that if he kept quiet, if all of them kept quiet, her parents would hear her and come to take her home?” (47).
Alina is constantly watching herself making sure that she doesn’t get on Mrs. Kong’s bad side, which would be horrible because she could end up getting fired and after that she will get deported and then she will have nothing to offer her family. On top of that her daughter doesn’t recognize who she is and as for her husband who knows what he could be doing so far away. Later on in the story Mr. Kong also comes out with the truth and end up telling Alina how madly in love he is with her and of course although that is her boss she would not allow him to continue and try to kiss her, so she end up going to jail. After being in jail assuming that is basically the end for her, Mrs. Kong comes out of nowhere and bails
Since during the novella Curley’s wife is constantly bullied and segregated which drives her to having to flirt with the men since it is the only way she can get anyone to talk to her so she deserves to live a life free from loneliness and sorrow and to live her dream. George in one way gets what he deserves since that he is freed from constantly having to watch out for and look after Lennie so he can live his life how he wants with no distractions. However, he does lose his best friend and only companion which is grave since now he has no one to share his lifelong dream with. Lennie deserves a better a more full life where his dream of petting rabbits comes true and that he is forced to be valiant by George and occidentally kills Curley’s
Orual never feels that she is loved by anyone, that is, until Psyche enters her life after Psyche’s mother dies giving birth to her. Orual takes it upon herself to become Psyche's guardian and to raise her. Orual loves Psyche more than anything, but her love is selfish and very possessive. Orual is tormented by the thought of having to ever give Psyche from her possession and she does everything in her power to prevent it. After first being separated from Psyche then becoming bitter from not seeing the same things as Psyche once reunited, I realized the tragedy was that not only did Orual never found the “love of the Gods,” she also never learned to love her life and accept herself as the person she was.
Creon cares about his son so much he doesn’t want Haemon to marry Antigone just because she broke the law. Creon says, “You will never marry this side of death.”(646) Creon cares mostly about his family and don’t Haemon to marry a women that did something bad. Creon is doing the right thing for his son so he can live a better life than marrying a woman that broke the law. Creon also says, “No son of mine shall web so vile a creature.”(486) Haemon tries so hard to convince her father to let him marry her but Creon is stopping him. He cares about her wife, Eurydice, as well because Creon wanted to suicide when he saw his son and wife died in scene 8.
"Sure." Unfortunately Krebs is too caught up in his own world to be his sister’s older brother and to show her why this mindset she has is wrong. There comes a point where both of Krebs’s parents are fed up with his laziness and his unwillingness to do anything with his life that his mother sits him down and tries to approach him in a more of a religious way. She speaks of God and how much they love him and want the best for him. "I'm your mother," she said.
Along with that, she’s married to Curley who she never really loved thus making it even lonelier for her. Also, since she’s married she can’t follow her dream of being a movie star which she confesses to George and Lennie. For instance Curley says to her “Why’nt you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs?” This shows no one wants Curley’s wife around. Steinbeck even give her a name of her own. That just shows how much he wanted to express her isolation.
Seymour is in a loveless marriage to his wife Muriel. He cannot connect with her, due to the fact that she is more interested in herself, than her own husband while on their vacation. Muriel’s family is concerned with Seymour’s behavior, and fears for their daughter’s safety. Seymour is so detached from the world he lives in, that he takes the ultimate escape, suicide. The fact that Muriel has no concern for her husband’s mental health, and continues her disconnected communication with him, further explains the idea that isolation is destructive in society, and causes and individual to an unthinkable escape.
