The Color Purple is about a young fourteen year old girl named Celie who has a rough time growing up, but as she gets older she realizes there is more to life. Celie is constantly abused and raped by her “Pa” who ends up taking away her children as soon as they are born. Her only escape to get through all this at such a young age is to write letters made out to God. This helps her get through some of the hardest times in her life. Later on, Celie is married off to a man who is just as abusive as her Pa. She is not even willing to call her husband by his name, but instead by Mr. ___. He is only married to Celie just to take care of his four children, take care of his home, and work in his fields. Although she is still living in a bad environment, she is somewhat happy to be married because she can now have her younger sister leave Pa’s household. Unfortunately, after Nettie moves in with Celie and her husband, she is soon kicked out for not doing what Mr. ___ wants her to do sexually. Even though Nettie still promises to stay in contact with Celie through letter, Celie doesn’t hear from her. Her life continues to just get worse with time since she separated from the one person she loved, Nettie. When she also moves in with Mr. ___, she meets his son, Harpo, who shortly falls in love with a girl named Sofia. She becomes one of Celie’s great friends who they both look up to, even though they are totally opposite people. Celie is not willing to fight back towards anyone or anything, while Sofia will not tolerate any type of abuse from anyone, even her husband, Harpo. Sadly, Harpo finds another lover, Squeak, because Sofia isn’t willing to endure the abuse he was going cause her. As time goes by, Celie’s life soon changes in a blink of an eye. One day Mr. ___ bring his extremely ill mistress, Shug Avery, to their home so Celie can nurse her back to health. Celie
