The American Dream By: Christian Rush English III 2nd Period Coach Walls What is the American Dream? By definition, the American dream is living a life of personal happiness and material comfort. It’s the opportunity to make your own way and do what you want to do. In this financial crisis, people wonder if the American dream is still alive today. I still believe in the American dream because of people like Ben & Jerry, John Rockefeller, and Richard Colson Baker (MGK). The American dream has changed due to technology, but is still maintainable and maybe a little easier to achieve if you work hard enough. Through social media and online video marketing, promoting yourself and starting your American dream is easier than ever.…show more content…
Richard Colson Baker was born in April 22, 1990, in Texas to missionary parents and took up residence in Egypt, Germany, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and Ohio. Since he lived the first four years of his life in Egypt, he spoke Arabic before English. He started listening to rap in the sixth/seventh grade when he went to Hamilton Middle School, a mixed race school in Denver. In Denver, the Baker’s lived with MGK’s aunt. At the age of fourteen, Baker moved to his now hometown Cleveland, where he attended Shaker Heights High School and graduated in 2008. IOn the verge of getting evicted, Baker went to Harlem's Apollo Theater in March 2009 where he had back-to-back victories, making him the first white rapper to ever win at the Apollo Theater. After the Apollo in 2009, He began to work on the mixtape that would change his life forever. “Lace Up”, released in 2010, reached not only his strong local fan base, but a nationwide audience. The fans he has are hardcore and dedicated because they can relate to him. That’s why fans have “Lace Up” tattoos and spend their last dime on tickets to see him. After being broke, fighting drug addiction, growing up without a mom or really a supportive dad, he was able to live his dream in front of the world through the power of the internet, and hard work.
