The men who view him this way are totally different from each other. For example, George plays the role of the family member to Lennie, which at times makes him act cruel towards Lennie. At first, Crooks views Lennie as just another one of the workers who treats him badly then later realizes he is a nice and caring man. Curley on the other hand strongly dislikes big men and being that Lennie is a big guy, Curley never gives Lennie a chance to be friends. Lennie is viewed by s few characters in the novel and it affects their characterization.
It is also obvious that they both have low self-esteem. In one way or another they both feel bad about themselves. Joshua feels bad at the way he looks and Dominic feels bad that he is thirty and alone. Joshua accepts people to take advantage of him because he needs love and Dominic takes advantage to feel love. Dominic also likes animals and this tells me that he is a caring person.
When they would talk about their families and tell me their stories of why they were there, I found myself getting angry at God. I didn’t understand how God could let a child go through all that suffering. I later realized that everything happens for a reason and that I was sent to Mindo for a special reason. I was to be a friend to these children. I wanted make their lives better, even if it was just for than one week I was in Mindo.
When the men in the work place make sexual advances towards Clare or degrade women and each other nothing seems out of the ordinary in fact it seems natural for such masculine based behaviors to be presented. However, when anyone, male or female, shows signs of any female oriented ideal or emotion they are immediately condoned for it and made to feel ashamed. For instance, when Mary begins to cry her boss cracks a joke about women not being able to hold their water. This statement devalues the emotion presented making it appear to be a sign of weakness that only women are capable of and ultimately feeds back into the patriarchy mentality of the dominance of the men over the submissive female. This sense of empowerment given to men in the work force again delivers them the benefit of feeling safe with their ‘authoritative’ actions and behaviors making them feel more at ease within GameaVision.
