Tattoos - do or taboo? Tattoos are no longer taboo. And they're not just for the young and rebellious any more. Tattoos are now a family affair. There can be up to five tattoos per family of 4 adults. Tattooing has been done as a decorative practice since ancient times. It's now also being used for some cosmetic medical procedures and for permanent makeup applications. Tattoos have been part of mainstream culture for some time now and it's clear that they're here to stay. People worldwide get their bodies tattooed for a million reasons, including marking a drastic change in their lives, or highlighting something that influenced them, either in a positive or negative way. In the You magazine of 5 September 2013, Japanese marketing companies are using ladies older than 18 years to advertise a company logo on the upper leg by using tattoos. The ladies are queuing for the tattoos and are paid R1000-00 per day to literally become a walking advertisement for a company. But will the old stigmas remain. The demand for tattooing has grown in recent years. According to Cayla Martin from the Faculty of Education at the Univercity of Canada she think it's a trend and should be more accepted, but people are still experiencing a stigma. The American Academy of Dermatology found nearly a quarter of 18 to 50 year olds had tattoos in 2004. Today employers are realising that they are not going to let somebody art get in the way of hiring the best qualified candidate. In June 2006, one of the nation's biggest and most conservative employers, the Defence Force, lifted a rule that allowed it to bar anyone with a tattoo from joining up. Tattoos is an art movement in its own right.
