It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me” (137) Gatsby is telling of how Daisy Buchanan is no longer loyal to Tom and how she now wants him back because he has run into money. Through Daisy, F. Scott Fitzgerald use of this character to exposes the new class that only wants to party and spend money. Daisy herself is old money locked in to the life of fortune.“But what gave it an air of breathless intensity was that Daisy lived there-it was as casual a thing to her as his tent out at camp was to him. There was a ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms, of gay and radiant activities taking place through its corridors and of romances that were not musty and laid away already in lavender but fresh and breathing and redolent of this year’s shining motorcars and of dances who’s flowers were scarcely withered” (155-156). This is proof that Daisy is in it for the money and is now leaving Tom Buchanan for Jay Gatsby.
He completely depends on money to meet his family’s needs and thinks that “life is money,” more than he trust in his mama and family. Walter is a fairly ineffective man in his house, who has be unable to gain his financial freedom. It becomes expected of Walter in his growth in the movie that his economic inconsistency endangers his ability to meet house hold duties. Throughout the movie, he supplies accurate illustrations to live up to the expected character of Walter Lee Younger. He shows his dependency on money instead of the family with definite evidence of anxiety to acquire his father's insurance check, that the family was waiting for from the start of the movie, in order to attain his goals.
His financial struggles continue with late bills, and no payment for his premium insurance; he is going deep into debt. He ignores the problems and thinks that everything is going to be all right. Because of the booming economy, he is left behind in the dust; everybody competes for positions in their respective professions, in the world of America’s business. For, if it is true to say that in essence the tragic hero is intent upon claiming his whole due as a personality, and if this struggle must be total and without reservation, then it automatically demonstrates the indestructible will of man to achieve his humanity. (miller, common man) He worries for his family so he decidesl himself by getting in his vehicle and crashing into an object so his family could get money from insurance.
Concerning his mother, he states that her being constructed by others, meaning she lives on support from others, makes her notoriously fragile. He also criticizes the way which his mother overly values wealth, marrying for money and trying to make him do the same. Upon his description of Dora, he shows that beauty is a key point in making a woman attractive. He seems to believe that women exist to serve men, and women who fail to meet the standards of men are of no use. For instance, he criticizes Dora for bringing in his breakfast late, and immediately starts insulting her, calling her a pig.
He is not satisfied with the safety his marriage had developed and greedily risks it all for the possibility of greater happiness in his affair with Alberta. In his explanation to Rose he uncovers his discontent in his days to day pressures at home and wants to “be a part of himself that he ain’t never been” (2.1.97). He gambled his relationship with Rose and lost his wife for the illusion of happiness, not aware of the responsibilities his adultery would bring. After he learns of Alberta’s death the burden of raising a daughter himself became a reality. In his plea to Rose to help mother his child she accepts, but informs him he’s “a womanless man” (2.3.4).
She can’t go back and forth for the richer man just so she has more money. In comparison, Tom has his own little affairs. When he and Gatsby are arguing, he talks his affairs in relation with his wife. He tells Gatsby: “And what’s more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always
I can’t help what’s past.’ She began to sob helplessly. ‘I did love him once — but I loved you too.’” (140) Gatsby expects that Daisy will be happy to leave Tom behind and break off her marriage with him. Gatsby's dream has been to build a fortune and reclaim the love that he once lost because, as he sees it, he was too poor for Daisy when they first met. This proves my claim because this displays, in Daisy’s words, that Gatsby did expect too much, he expected for her to make a big deal in front of Tom. This proves my thesis because we can see that he expects a lot of Daisy.
His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate were slipping precipitately from his control.”(p.119) Tom knows that Daisy only married him for his money and although she has developed feelings for him, he fears that if he leaves her for Myrtle she will turn to Gatsby. Tom may in fact feel threaten by how Gatsby has such an extravagant house and parties. Tom has been rich all his life and it isn’t until Gatsby shows up does he realize that he might lose Daisy. Because of this Tom tells Myrtle that he and Daisy cannot get a divorce because she is a Christian. It is evident that he is not happy being married to Daisy because he has an affair with Myrtle.
After giving up her dream of being an actress, she settles down with a man she doesn’t even like and begins to wallow in her dissatisfaction with the choices she has made. “’I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself’” (88), she says. Curley’s attitude toward his wife and the other men on the ranch worsens as time goes by, driving the woman away. She wanders from building to building claiming that she’s looking for Curley, when she actually just wants to have a conversation with anyone.
Really unpack the symbolic possibilities. Gatsby didn’t marry Gatsby because he was poor, and Tom was rich, in the simplest of terms. But when you delve deeper the problem for Daisy now is that her marriage with Tom is a failure, and a man she loves, rich beyond his means, has basically knocked on her door asking for her. I think Daisy sobs not only because now Gatsby is a class above her, but she know they can never be together. She comes from one social status the wealthy, sophisticated community of West egg.
