Super-Size Me Review Super-Size Me is a documentary by Morgan Spurlock about McDonald’s and its adverse health effects. The film involves documenting Spurlock over a 30 day period in which he eats only McDonald’s, in an effort to prove that the fast food chain is one of the leading causes of consumer weight gain. He ate at McDonald’s three times per day and had to consume everything on the menu at least once. Another stipulation he made was that he had to “Super-Size”, make the portion larger, if asked by the cashier. Spurlock claimed to have consumed over 5,000 calories per day at during this experiment. The film begins with Spurlock in good shape planning to take on this diet. As the film continues his doctors warn him against continuing his diet due to its adverse effects on his body including rapid weight gain, mood swings, depression, decreased sex drive, and heart problems. Spurlock ate most of the meals in Manhattan, New York and Houston, Texas. By the end of the film he had gained 24 ½ pounds as a result of the experiment. The end of the film states that it took him five months of extreme vegan dieting to lose about 20 pounds. This film essentially states what most people already knew about fast food, it isn’t healthy. What the film does provide is numerical evidence of the bad effects of consuming too much fast food. It also give a possible reason as to why obesity has become a “epidemic” in the United States. Aside from the obvious weight loss, it shows the psychological effects that this type of diet can have on an individual. The film not only attacks McDonald’s but the fast food industry as a whole. Spurlock condemns fast food like tobacco companies were condemned years ago. He shows that fast food can be physiological addictive and physical harmful to the consumer.
