Several barriers hindered the use of labor union strikes but to a certain extent, organized labor was successful for being so persistent. As seen in Document A, labor hours were shortened and the average wage increased slightly. Their persistence helped companies hesitate when slashing wages. But it was not enough for the satisfaction of the workers. Organized labor did indeed try to succeed, few goals were achieved, but too many impediments stood in their way of significantly improving their positions.
Along with these dreadful wages and hours there were poor working conditions. The working conditions were the main cause for the strikes. There were improvements being made throughout the time period. “The working people find that improvements are constantly being made, and unless a strike, the improvements will all go to the employer…” (Doc I). As stated, without the laborers performing a strike the improvements would just benefit the employers and the employees had to work for every little thing they got.

Reality always defeats dreams. No matter whether or not the dream is simple, in order to achieve it, the journey will be complicated. In Salinas, California during the Great Depression, life was rather busy. Individuals revolved their lives around work, and hardly left themselves leisure time for fantasizing. Dreams were rarely obtained due to the harsh circumstances.
A major effect of the industrialization was the rates of unemployment. These rate dropped significantly due to the high productivity and prosperity of big businesses. Since the businesses were doing so well and were producing many goods, they did not need a lot of workers to do the jobs which the machines were doing. A lot of people were very upset about this because they were losing their jobs and were no longer able to support themselves. These people were also angry at the working conditions and danger in the labor forces.
