1. What were the challenges that Shikhar Ghosh faced when he joined Appex? 2. Evaluate the importance of each of the structural changes he implemented. How important were they? What problems did each new structure address? What problems, in turn, did they create? 3. What would you have done in Shikhar’s place? Were all the changes in structure necessary? How would you address the challenges Appex is facing at the end of the case? When Shikhar joined Appex it was entrepreneurial and technology-driven company. According to what I read in case it would be exciting and fun to work because everyone did everything and there were no job descriptions. They were growing and enjoying this crazy time. However Shikhar realized that this entrepreneurial stage is becoming too long and he even recognized strong signs that it was leading to chaos. Company was growing and expanding but dangerous features accrued – company was spending more and more money without any serious control, customers were starting to complain more about undelivered services, requests that were left without response. This was happening because lack of functional structure and clear job descriptions. It lead to problematic situation that employees were working with numerous projects at time what even resulted as so called fire-fighting when employees did those tasks which occurred during the day and did not make and follow for further periods. Of course this was very difficult situation to manage because the overall industry was growing rapidly. Appex was very successful dealing with little number of clients and satisfied their needs excellent, because employed engineers were doing their job great. But when the demand increased they were starting to make mistakes in their product and overriding schedules. My opinion is that definitely Shikhar could skip some of structural changes he led.
