Roberts Pāns AVMM2 Essay Evolution of the portable storage devices Information, most of the times, is something, that is meant to share with. Storage devices have always evolved along with computer technology. Because where ever there are computers – there will be some kind of an information, which in most of the cases, will be carried over to other working stations, shared and copied. And by information I mean not only some numbers and text, but basically everything around us – pictures, videos, news, using modern technology. As the first step of this evolution I would like to mention Punch-cards, which were invented in 1890, in the US. They were widely used throughout the 19th century for controlling textile looms and in the late 19th and early 20th century for operating fairground organs and related instruments. Later also used in unit record machines for input, processing, and data storage. Company, that started producing them first, was later renaimed as IBM, which we all know very well. Later on as a sort of a „modification” came the Punch Tape, which, of course, was a bit more compact and that’s basically it. This tape was first introduced in 1937. and mostly used in administration buildings. Of coures, during these years, computers were nowhere close to being used in households. I would like to claim, that first computer storage devices widely used by everyday people, were the Floppy disks invented by Alan Shugart at IBM in 1971. It was considered as a revolutionary device for transporting data from one computer to another. Floppy disks were not able to store as much data as hard disks, but they were much cheaper and more flexible. This invention was also the end for punch cards. First of them was the 8inch floppy, which was able to hold only 80 kb (which is 8750 times less than a normal CD today). Later came the 5 ½ inch version, which was able to
