Simon's Eulogy

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ralph and I am one of Simon’s best friends. It is with great sadness that I stand in front of you today to celebrate the life of my friend. Simon’s life was taken away from us too soon and it is hard to understand why tragic things like this happen to such good people. However, this is a question without an answer and we should not dwell on the loss of our dear friend, son and brother. This island has changed us. Turned us into the very beasts we were afraid of. But within our chaos and power struggles, there was one person that had remained calm through it all. And now he has escaped without us, leaving to a better place than this cursed island. He was a quiet one, invisible to others. I only noticed him when he had been picked to go with us to explore the island. We laughed, we had fun. We pretended we weren't stuck on an island and were explorers, charting unknown lands. That was probably the first time I truly opened up to any of the islanders and most likely the last. Things fell apart. Jack had become obsessed with killing pigs. The littluns cried out. No one did their work; except for Simon. Even when the littluns were running off to the beach, playing in the water, he was there to build the shelters with me. He was probably the only reliable boy on this island. Not only was he helpful, but his voice gave me assurance after I lost hope. Hope that we would soon be rescued. He came to me when I was looking out to the sea for answers. He told me everything will be alright. I thought it was stupid at first. I mean, who would believe such pathetic words? I did. It could have been the way he said "you'll get back to where you came from" or the way he smiled at me. But I was lured back in to believing a ship would find us. Of course, things got better to worse within hours. The "beast" finally appeared,
