Hemingway portrays Francis to be a man of little courage in the face of danger, as well in his relationship with his wife. Francis eventually has an emotional turning after a hinted affair between Margot and Wilson the night before a buffalo hunt. As he proceeds to look for the destructive animal, he spots it in a field peacefully eating grass and harming no one. The animal does not die immediately and, not being able to bear to see the animal suffer, the policeman leaves.

The similarities between the story and the film “A Sound of Thunder” are few. The film and the story are both based on a safari trip to the past. On the trip the explorers planned to kill a dinosaur right before it was intended to be killed by natural causes. While on the trip if anything was disturbed are lefts behind, it would cause a change to the future.
