Donating to ST. JUDES CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL There are so many worthy causes. The one that had the most effect on me was the St. Jude children’s research hospital. I had recently donated money to the nearest retail store that had been collecting donations for this organization. I believed that this organization is a great cause not only because it cured my best friend, but also because they never turn their backs on any children that has a sickness. No family ever pays St. Jude for transportation, food, care, or housing.

My personal journey led me to begin a career working with this exact same population and now close to twenty years in the field of violence prevention, I continue to feel compassion and passion for the work I do; supporting young men of color navigate through life experiences that often traumatizes them and systems that often marginalize their needs. I was fortunate to find an article that does a great job at framing the issue of community violence and the experiences that young men of color face in their daily lives. The article is titled, Approaching the Health and Well-being of Boys and Men of Color Through Trauma-Informed Practice by Theodore Corbin, Sandra L. Bloom, John A. Rich, Ann Wilson and Linda Rich. The article can be found in the book Changing Places: How Communities Will Improve the Health of Boys of Color, published by the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy.

SELF AWARENESS This week’s session really resonated with me as my entire journey of self awareness has resulted in my commencing this degree. Several aspects of the session were particularly apt, especially the “Physician Health Thyself” message which I feel is so important when treating patients. When you’ve walked a mile in your patients’ shoes, their treatment becomes so much more holistic and encompassing as you, as a natural physician, have an understanding of and empathy for what they’re experiencing. This, in turn, builds a special rapport with your patient, making it even easier for them to trust you with their treatment. Self awareness has been the single largest contributor to my ongoing health renaissance and I have no doubt that it will continue to guide me through this new journey.
