The decision is usually made when the person asking for it, is suffering from an terminal or incurable disease. 2. Define the term Redemptive Suffering Redemptive Suffering is a notion in regards to Euthanasia. Adherents offer up their pain and their suffering in this world to the pain and suffering of the crucified Christ. Through the belief in redemptive suffering, the adherents do not require euthanasia and the notion of euthanasia becomes redundant for true believers in Christ.
‘The Catholic Church is driven by an understanding that each and every person is a child of God with a dignity that nothing can erase’. This statement was taken from the address of the paper ‘Confronting the Death Penalty’. This statement reasons that everyone is a child of God and no matter how bad someone may be, they will always have some good in them this good is the ‘dignity’ of a human person. Furthermore, Jesus changed the law from eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth to if someone slaps you turn the other cheek. Freedom-Truth, Law, the Church and Morality. Kasey Smith Faith and Moral Development Mary Caprio 9.18.11 Freedom-Truth and Law In Veritatis Splendor, Pope John Paul ll addresses the issue between freedom and truth, and between freedom and the law. How he addresses each of these issues, and how these are related to these concepts for the faithful, as well as the church and the world as it relates to morality, will be reviewed in this paper. Pope John Paul ll begins by addressing the fact that human freedom is one of the most debated issues. “The dignity of the human person is a concern of which people of our time are becoming increasingly more aware.” I believe that what he means by this is that as the generations pass, people are thinking more for themselves than they ever have before.” People are now demanding to “enjoy the use of their own responsible judgment and freedom, and to decide on their actions on grounds of duty and conscience, without external pressure of coercion.” What I take from this is that people believe that they know what’s best for them, and they think that God’s law really has no bearing on the decisions they make.
Functionalists see society as a group of institutions. A social institution being a place where there is a set of rules for behaviour. For example, schools, churches and families. To Functionalists, each institution has its own place in sustaining society and maintaining order. The functionalist perspective recognises that families perform vital functions for their members and for their society, to ensure stability and harmony in order to achieve social order (Giddens, 2009).
