Sylvia Plath uses nature and the world as a foundation for several of her poems. She grew up with her family living by the sea which she admired for its beauty and power. However, though she admired the sea whilst she was growing up, Plath often depicts nature and the sea as threatening and compelling. Contrastingly, though, in some ways Plath portrays nature and the sea as a sign of hope and sympathy. The natural world provokes many different feelings for Plath, which can be explored in many of her poems.
Throughout The Color of Water, James McBride reveals the purpose behind the story. He wishes to give tribute to his unique and determined mother, while also describing how his mixed background affected his life. McBride worked his message into The Color of Water in many ways, with one of the most prevalent being the organization of the story. At the beginning of each chapter, his mother’s story is told from her point of view. The second portion of the chapter is McBride’s story, which includes both insight into his mother and also his mixed racial and cultural ways.

They tear open the bag and the winds are released, blowing the ship back to Aeolia. This shows how disloyal the crew was being to Odysseus. This also demonstrates how careless Odysseus can be. Although, Odysseus is only human and cannot possibly remember to tell his crew every detail that happens in his life, so he cannot be blamed very much for this incident.

The sea has opened up a new pathway of exploration for Edna. Chopin makes a reference to its “voice,” which calls to and seduces Edna in her “awakened” life. Edna had answered the call of the ocean as Edna begins her final walk into the gulf in chapter XXXIX. Chopin repeats the line quoted from page 18, and this scene clearly represents the theme of a women search of self identity. As Edna takes her last steps she takes them towards the sea.
Her mother, Azra, and father, Mugdim, accompanied her to the aquarium. “After being in a war zone, this should be a piece of cake,” Kazazic said as she lowered herself into the tank. She held out a hand to Winter, who approached cautiously, then glided away. After a few minutes, the dolphin let Kazazic stroke her back. Finally, Winter nuzzled up to her shoulder.
Just like what the devil did to Eve, he promised her that the forbidden fruit would give her sensations beyond her wildest beliefs but ended up getting her kicked out of Eden and punished humans for eternity. The ocean is like this to Edna because it promises freedom, which is exactly what she has been looking for, and it ends up being the death of a woman who already has a good amount of independence. Chopin also makes Edna seem less than holy in this passage because after all, she is a woman and since her transformation stumbled and was never truly completed, she is stuck between a sacred figure and just another failure. Edna decides to kill herself on her way to beach because of her suffering and search for more and more freedom. The weather amplifies the feeling of pain and hopelessness, the sun is hot and the water seems like the perfect relief to get away from everything.
