| | | An Activity Series 1/9/13 Makieya DunhamPartners: Jasmine Lewis and Danielle Anderson | | | Problem Statement: In this lab we determined the activity series for five metals and for three halogens. In the first part of the lab we used a microscale technique to rank the metals that reacted with the other metal nitrates from most reactive to least reactive. The metal that reacts with another metal nitrate, then the solid metal have reduced the other metal ion and is the more reactive metal of the two. In the second part of the lab we used the solvent extraction technique to derive an activity series for the halogens. Safety Precautions: When in the lab we wore goggles, an apron, and gloves the entire time.
• If the protein doesn't fold properly or if it misfolds, the process results in disease. The misfolding of the protein PrPC turns to a harmful PrPSc. • PrPSc is hydrophobic and needs other cells so it changes other PrPC’s into PrPSc. • Eventually all of the PrPC’s are changed to PrPSc’s and aggregate together in the cell and ultimately kill the cell. • This cell death is what gives tissue the spongy like appearance known as BSE.
Whilst I was doing this course I realised this course is for people who want to pursue a career in a health and social care sector, to become a nurse, midwife, social worker, counsellor , care worker etc. That’s why I carried on to do level 3 at sixth form. | When I started this course in September (Health and Social Level 3) I had more of an understanding of what I’ll gain in terms of skills and a lot of knowledge. I knew as this was a BTEC Health and Social course it would consist 100% of coursework but my teacher gave me more information about this course such as there is 6 units in year 12 and another 6 in year 13. My knowledge in Health and Social is getting better as my teachers told me what to include in my assignments and how to get a pass merit and distinction.
If this fails, a pancrelipase and sodium bicarbonate solution may be instilled in order to "digest" the clog. Metabolic complications: Metabolic complications of enteral nutrition are similar to those that occur during PN, although the incidence and severity may be less. Careful monitoring can minimize or prevent metabolic complications. Refeeding syndrome: Refeeding of severely malnourished patients may result in "refeeding syndrome" in which there are acute decreases in circulating levels of potassium, magnesium, and phosphate. The sequel of refeeding syndrome adversely affect nearly every organ system and include cardiac dysrhythmias, heart failure, acute respiratory failure, coma, paralysis, nephropathy, and liver dysfunction.
ABSTRACT Isopropyltoluene isomers were synthesized through the friedel-crafts alkylation of toluene with 2-chloropropane in the presence of aluminum chloride as a catalyst. Through extraction of the distillate with water and 5% NaHCO3, followed by a fractional vacuum distillation, the desired aromatic organic compound was isolated. Infrared Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography were used to analyze the composition, purity and to confirm the identity of the prepared product. The sample weighed approximately 2.66g, which reflected a low yield at 47%. However, from the GC the area % (also known as percent purity) was 91.8%, which indicates that a very pure product was obtained.
BIOL 1010 ‐ Biotechnology and Society Assignment #2 Genetic Disease Briefing Cystic Fibrosis Name: Zeina Hassan Date: Monday, November 11th, 2013 Cystic fibrosis, also known as CF, is a disease that causes the body to produce thick and sticky mucus in various parts of the body, resulting in problems in two of the major areas in the body: the lungs and the digestive system (KidsHealth, 2013). Mucus is a slimy substance that is secreted by the mucus membranes of the body. It has several functions in the body such as, lubricating the digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems. It helps keeps the bodily tissues moist and prevent tissues from getting infected or from drying out (KidsHealth,
In cases that the lesions appeared on the scalp, they often permanently damage the hair follicles resulting in permanent hair loss. Drug-induced lupus is similar to SLE, but is brought on my drugs that treat different diseases. Some of the medications that can cause Drug- Induced Lupus include: Anti-seizure medications, Capoten, Infliximab, and Penicillamine. Symptoms tend to occur after 3 to 6 months of taking these drugs. (Weebly 6) The liver can be over worked by consuming a great amount of steroids, slowing the bile movement through the liver which can increase the chances of a tumor developing. (Alvin, Virginia, Silverstein 42) Anabolic steroids can be taken orally, applied as a gel or cream, and injected. (Woolston) When injecting steroids through a syringe the possibility of contracting a blood borne disease dramatically increases. The use of anabolic steroids can affect your life in so many ways. Steroids can be particularly dangerous for adolescents because of bodies are still developing and can cause adulthood before reaching puberty.
Thanks to this extra experience working with chemicals at the salon, I have learned how chemicals enter the human anatomy, such as through hair and nails. I’ve gained a vast amount of experience from my extracurricular work at the salon, and I feel truly prepared for the next level. So far, my educational, employment and volunteer experiences will all greatly help me to become an exceptional chemist. Studying Chemistry has helped me to focus on my goal and to determine the correct path to becoming a successful dermatologist. Choosing the United States as the country in which I will follow my academic career has opened new doors in my life.
