Daniel D ENGL 1301 Athletes On Anabolic Steroids Athletes on anabolic steroids is a controversial topic. On one hand athletes believe that steroids only enhance and improve athletic performance. On the other hand, scientists believe it can enhance athletic performance but can also be damaging and have negative effects on the body. Females who abuse steroids are just as common as men, but have different effects.The negative side effects of using anabolic steroids outweigh the desired results. Anabolic steroids are synthetic drugs that expose the same hormone of testosterone.(Woolston) When taking steroids, athletes have the capacity of gaining more muscle and stamina. Many people using steroids can get liver cancer, psychological defects, have organ damage, hormonal changes, and sometimes infertility. They can increase the risk of tearing tendons, developing enlarged breasts in males, and an increase of facial hair in females. Most minor effects can lead up to life threatening or possibly even death. Many major and long-term problems include urinary trouble, aggression, paranoia, insomnia, depression, nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, heart disease, aching joints, liver cancer, and liver damage.(Weebly 6) The liver can be over worked by consuming a great amount of steroids, slowing the bile movement through the liver which can increase the chances of a tumor developing.(Alvin, Virginia, Silverstein 42) Anabolic steroids can be taken orally, applied as a gel or cream, and injected.(Woolston) When injecting steroids through a syringe the possibility of contracting a blood borne disease dramatically increases. The use of anabolic steroids can affect your life in so many ways. Steroids can be particularly dangerous for adolescents because of bodies are still developing and can cause adulthood before reaching puberty. In this result it can cause premature baldness. The maximum penalty for a first offense of trafficking illegal steroids is five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.(Friedman 85) There is no point in having life threatening diseases and a high chance of losing life careers for taking steroids. The muscle and stamina gained is great but it doesn’t last forever. The consequences can be life threatening if not just severe injuries. Possibly causing careers and jobs to be lost.
