These events can vary in magnitude but at the end of the event they all tend to reveal the truth about the situation at hand. These types of events often teach us who we are but can also show us who others really are as well. In Mary Hood’s short story “How Far She Went” she depicts how one extraordinary event forces the young girl to learn about herself as well as her grandmother. After a life-changing interaction with two drunken motorcyclists, the young girl learns a great deal of respect for her grandmother through the events that show her grandmother’s determination and sacrifice to save her. At first the girl exhibits angry and defiant behavior in order to show her feelings about living with her grandmother. In the first confrontation between the two the girl disrespectfully yells at her grandmother, “I hate it here!” She then throws sticks at the laundry displaying her immaturity towards her relationship with her grandma. The girl runs off in anger after she yells, “You don’t know me!” This is a clear sign of the girl’s rebellion and lack of respect for her grandmother. This rebellion that the young girl is showing may be a result of her father’s negligence towards his daughter. Hood shows this when the girl comes back from running away and the grandmother summarizes a letter she received, “Your daddy wants you to cash in the plane ticket and buy you something, school clothes, for here.” After this the girl shows utter disbelief at the fact that her father had been planning to leave her with her grandmother. The girl’s actions show she blames her grandmother as if she was at fault for her current predicament.
