Biography Jesse Owens, the son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave, achieved what no Olympian before him had accomplished. His stunning achievement of four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin has made him the best remembered athlete in Olympic history. The seventh child of Henry and Emma Alexander Owens was named James Cleveland when he was born in Alabama on September 12, 1913. "J.C.", as he was called, was nine when the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where his new schoolteacher gave him the name that was to become known around the world. The teacher was told "J.C." when she asked his name to enter in her roll book, but she thought he said "Jesse".

Upon his graduation from high school in 1941, Carter enrolled in Georgia Southwestern College, but in 1942 he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. At Rutgers, Paul won a total of 15 letters in track, basketball, baseball and football and twice was elected to the collegiate All-American football team. Paul excelled in the classroom as well. In 1918, he was elected to the national honors society, Phi Beta Kappa, and in 1919 graduated as the valedictorian of his class, having achieved the highest scholastic average in the history of the college. In 1919 Robeson entered the Columbia University School of Law and in 1923 graduated with a law degree. While attending school, Paul played professional football.
He became Vice President of the student body during his junior year, and moved up to President in his senior year. Sam Walton excelled academically becoming an honors student. Sam grew up during the great depression and he did many odd jobs to help meet his family needs. The family owned a cow, which Sam milked and bottled the excess milk and delivered it to customers on the same route as his paper route. He was awarded “The most versatile award” at his high school graduation.

After attending Northeastern High, Berry Jr. chased a dream of becoming a professional boxer. He even once fought on the same card as Joe Louis.
