Reality television stars are often praised by the general public. One reality star known as Nene Leakes is a cast member of the reality show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” as well as a co-star in the sitcom “Glee.” Leakes has many sides that are attributed to by her social and cultural surroundings. This would be known in the world of social psychology as the self-fulfilling prophesy (Hardy, lecture, September 12, 2013). The self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation about another that causes a person to act in ways that are indicative of the expectations (Hardy, lecture, September 12, 2013). Leakes is seen in a clip arguing with her co-star Kim Zolciak during a taping of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Reference clip 1). The general public may wonder how this woman can be so easily angered as well as use verbal threats of physical harm to another. Yet in this photo of her on the red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet she seems so poised and elegant as if she would not engage in public behavior as such (attached photo). Reinforcement to this behavior may stem from a self-perception of motivation, in which extrinsic motivation occurs due to her increasing popularity and financial success (Hardy, lecture, September 12, 2013). Extrinsic motivation is an ambition a person has to pursue activities that are negative or positive because of the external rewards granted or pressures from the environment surrounding (Hardy, lecture, September 12, 2013). With an increase in popularity and success, there is a need for Leakes to act out negatively, in order to boost or keep her career. In an interview with Anderson Cooper, Zolciak gives her opinion for Leakes behavior and the change in her behavior that Zolciak believes is caused by new “fame” (Reference clip 2).
