* This is a prime example of situational irony as Macbeth becomes ruthless later in the play. * This can be seen in Act 5 Scene 3 when he calls his servant a ‘whey-face’. * He becomes a desperado and arrogant, as he knows he is going to hell anyway, so he has no qualms about committing more sins, because he has gone against the Divine Right of Kings. * In the film, during Macbeth’s soliloquy, wine is used as the main prop and is used in many ways. * Stewart occasionally pauses and sniffs the red wine cork.
When Montresor is ready to go to the catacomb with Fortunato, he puts “on a mask of black silk” and wraps himself up in “a roquelaire.” He wears the mask and the roquelaire because it hides his identity. Montressor is sensitive and did many things to make this murder go smoothly and not to get caught. Secondly, Montresor is trickey. Montresor led Fortunato to believe he was his friend. Fortunato was drunk and Montresor led him to his catacombs claiming that he thinks he has a cask of Amontillado, but needs an expert to taste it.
“If it turns out that he tells the same story as you-then I, at least, will be cleared of responsibility”(Sophocles 58). The perceived meaning is that Oedipus believes that if the Shepard tells the same story as Jocasta, then Oedipus has no responsibility because then he is guaranteed not the killer, and the unperceived meaning is that regardless of the Shepard’s story, Oedipus is the killer because the Shepard just lies, so Oedipus still bears
He went too far. He also doesn’t know that his revenge will also hurt him. He won’t go to heaven because he killed someone. This story is also saying something that is true. Revenge is sweeter when the person least expects it.
Dorian thinks that he can escape from the consequences of his immoral life because the portrait takes the blame for him. But he goes too far by killing his old friend Basil Hallward and then suffers from guilt. Both authors demonstrate morality and its consequences through the given
Nevertheless one murder didn't comfort him, he thinks he needs to secure his position. So he goes off and hires hit men to kill who he thinks is his enemy, the one who can take his power, Banqo. Soon enough he finds himself ordering the slaughter of a traitors family, which is when remorse never enters his thoughts. Macbeth’s greed and ambitions are the sheer motivators of his killings and that is evident throughout the journey of the play. As Shakespeare once wrote , “Fair is foul and foul is fair” (Act I, Sc.I, Line
Montresor murders him because of some unnamed injustice he has suffered. Montresor plans to exact his revenge in a meticulous way, so that he cannot ever be blamed for the murder. During the Carnivale season, Montresor approaches Fortunato and tells him he has a wine at home that he says can pass for a expensive wine called Amontillado, and wants Fortunato to confirm if it is Amontillado or not. Fortunato, a known wine lover, is eager to go with Montresor to try the expensive wine. Montresor explains that he has put the bottle of Amontillado in his family’s catacombs with all of the remains of his ancestors.
The title of story plays a big part in deceiving Fortunato. The word cask, which means wine barrel, is derived from the same root word used to form casket, meaning coffin. Therefore when Montresor is speaking of going to the cask he is ironically speaking of Fortunato’s casket (Cummings 2). Along with the title Fortunato’s name is very ironic. In Italian Fortunato means fortunate one, this is ironic because Fortunato is very unfortunate in the story because he is being led to his death and is treated like a fool.
Fortunado has been insulted by Montressor and now he is out for revenge. Fortunado knows Montressor prides himself on his connoisseurship in wine , so he used that against him. He tells Montressor that he has come across a bottle of Sherry and wants to be assured it’s the real thing, he also offers to let Luchesi taste the wine knowing this would Montressor even more eager, being that Luchesi was Montressor's competition. Montressor was unaware that Fortuando was using the Sherry as bait , and eventually would kill him. Despite the many hints Montressor was given, he remained oblivious to the whole situation until it was too late.
In order to enact revenge on Fortunato, Montresor lures Fortunato to his catacombs to experience a newly acquired cask of Amontillado. Fortunato clearly has no idea that Montresor holds a grudge against him and easily falls into his trap. Montresor greets Fortunato like they're old friends, and guides him to his catacombs while Montresor dons a mask of black silk to hide his identity from any passers by. While in the catacombs, Fortunato has a horrible coughing bout, and Montresor treats Fortunato with kindness, keeping his enemy close by saying, "Come," I said, with decision, "we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, adored, beloved; you are happy as once I was.
