Pilgrims 1. Summary * Ella and Benjamin’s mom is suffering from cancer. On thanksgiving the two kids, the mom and the dad decide to go to a friend’s house. * The friend’s house was very strange to the two children. All the people in it were old and weary and cutting up vegetables. Ella and Benjamin were told to play with the other kids while the parents prepared dinner. Ella and Benjamin felt uncomfortable playing with the kids. They were playing some sort of capture game and they didn’t understand. Ella went inside to talk to her parents and she found them in a room secluded from everyone else. They are always holding hands and hugging and being there for each other. Through hard times I think that this is necessary to get by. You have to have someone to love and be on your side. Peter hurts and possibly kills another person but uses his dominance and bullying in the group to threaten the other children not to say a word. They go inside and no one says anything. * “As she glanced around the table she thought at the picture of the first thanksgiving on the bulletin board at school: The smiling pilgrims eating turkey and squash, the stern faced Native Americans looking as if they knew the worst was yet to come.” P.15 * This quote is a metaphor for the people at the table. I think the pilgrims are the children enjoying themselves because they don’t know what is happening or what’s to come.
