Central Idea: What may cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, What the symptoms of the disorder are, and the treatments that are given to someone who has been diagnosed with the illness. Introduction I. What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? How can someone be diagnosed with the illness, and how can it be treated? When it occurs soon after the trauma, it usually gets better after 3 months. However, some people have a longer-term form of PTSD, which can last for many years. 2. PTSD can occur at any age and can follow a natural disaster such as a flood or fire, or events such as war, prison, assault, domestic abuse, or rape. 3. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in the United States may have caused PTSD in some people who were involved, in people who saw the disaster, or the people who lost friends and loved ones. These kinds of events can produce stress in anyone, but not everyone develops PTSD. B. The cause of PTSD is unknown. 1. According to Paul Ballas, Head Doctor of the Department of Psychiatry at Thomas University Hospital in Philadelphia, Psychological, Genetic, Physical and Social factors are involved, as PTSD changes the body’s response to stress. 2. It affects the stress hormones and chemicals that carry information between the neurotransmitters. 3. Having been exposed to trauma in the past may increase the risk of PTSD. C. Medications are also helpful and typically given to those who suffer from PTSD. 1. Anti-depressants like Prozac, Zoloft, or Paxil help decrease the physical symptoms associated with the illness, as well as Clonidine, Guanidine, and Propranolol, decrease physical symptoms associated with PTSD. Individuals with PTSD are much likely to experience a relapse of their illness if antidepressant treatment is not continued for at least a year. 2. For combat-related PTSD, there is more evidence that Prozosin can be particularly helpful. Although other medications like Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, and Effexor are sometimes used to treat. 3. Nevertheless other effective, helpful medications for managing PTSD include mood stabilizers, such as Lamictal, Gabitril or Depakote, as well as mood stabilizers that are antipsychotics like Resperidone, Syprexa or Seroquel. These medicines are most effective for those who suffer from agitation, dissociation, hypervilgilance, paranoia, or brief psychotic reactions. Conclusion I.
