List the criteria for a diagnosis of mental retardation: People with mental retardation are well below average in both intelligence and adaptive abilities. A person with mental retardation has trouble with communicating, living at home, self-direction, and work/safety. 5. Explain one way in which sociocultural biases in testing might pose problems for assessing mental retardation. Sociocultural biases would be environmental conditions and social status.
This shows that privation had an effect on the children and had affected their ability to form attachments. Hodges and Tizard’s study suggests that privation has negative effects on people in later life; however there may be other factors that affect people. Privation is only one of these numerous factors and other studies have proven that children can recover from privation to form attachments in later life. Privation is more likely to cause damage when paired with other factors and therefore privation cannot be solely to blame for the inability to form attachments. In addition to this, the Hodges and Tizard study did not follow the participants into later life.
Don’t get me wrong, those these treatments will help the children cope and maybe even understand their disorder it will not cure it or take it away. For right now there is no known cure for Autism. All we can do is help these kids go on in life living with it and
English 1102 February 6, 2011 The Curious Case of House and Holmes What psychological disease could both Sherlock Holmes and House have? It is none other than Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger Syndrome is a form of autism but instead of lack of cognitive functioning and linguistic development those affected are able to retain both of these functions. Asperger Syndrome is believed to be caused by genes but research is not conclusive so the researchers cannot be sure. Asperger’s is known as a high functioning form of autism because as the person gets older they will be able be able to understand their strengths and weaknesses, be able to learn social skills, and may even be able to marry and have children.
Bernstein’s early work comes close with being a ‘cultural deficit’ model. Although Bernstein is sometimes accused of claims he never actually made, his early writings do seem to make a negative judgement on the ‘restricted code’. Murray from the New Right perspective has more recently pursued the theme of the development of an underclass culture. The poorest stratum in society have a distinct set of values which stem from high rates of illegitimacy, single parenthood, welfare dependency, poor socialisation of children. This cultural deprivation which Murray controversially links to lower IQ levels, is seen as creating a group of pupils who are fundamentally alienated from the education system.
Autistic individuals have difficult in inferring a range of mental states in others such as emotions, imaginations. The results from the advance theory of mind show that adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome were impaired on a theory of mind test despite having normal intelligence, whilst the Tourette’s syndrome group and the normal participants performed identically. Not being able to read emotions from eyes may explain why those with autism have difficulties inferring mental states in other people. Describe how the cognitive approach can explain language acquisition. The cognitive approach assumes that behavior, in this case language acquisition, can be explained in terms of the way the mind operates. Lock proposes that we acquire language through two key steps: associative symbol learning and representational symbol learning.
Other minority groups are similarly disadvantaged through childhood, including those with a disability. Research has shown that disabled people are more likely to live in poverty and less likely to have educational qualifications, even though they have similar aspirations than a peer with no disability. Whilst educational development has a large impact on the development of young people, impacting on their outcomes and life chances, social skills are also imperative in promoting wellbeing in a child’s life, and subsequently, adulthood. Children’s social development can be measured through various criteria, including attention, co-operation, sociability, openness, pro-social behaviour and self regulation. Positive development in these areas has been shown to promote educational attainment through to adulthood,
Professors believe that racism could be prevented through education; however, no research has proven this method to be effective. Despite the good intentions, these education programs would be ineffective due to the way humans think and the way they are influenced. Education programs in elementary schools designed to teach young students about racial issues would be useless. Educators believe if these children are taught about racial problems before they are old enough to form their own opinions, racism could be prevented. However, because racism originates from the home, any outside influences are pointless at the Cowan 2 elementary age.
However, because of strong emotions, the goal on both sides has become a mixture of historical facts, myths and half truths. (Bosiak). Some supporters of the English only movement believe that current policies such as bilingual education are deterring people from learning English. The current English-Only Movement, which states that English be the official and only language used in the United States, influences the lives of ESL students, their families and the teachers that work with them (ERIC). English only supporters state that bilingual education is ineffective and actually hinders the academic progress of children.
The working memory is the ability to hold certain pieces of information in the brain for the current use. The working memories of children who have been raised in poverty have smaller capacities than those of middle class children. The evidence of that is sociological and medical study made by Evan's and Schambergs. The study focused on stress level in poor middle class students. They found a direct link between poverty, stress and memory.
