Autism affects a person’s ability to communicate as well as how they interact and socialize with others. The 4 main categories of symptoms are social, language, behavioral and medical. A person with mild form of autism can live on their own and function normally, while more severe cases a person can be non-verbal and function on a limited basis. Autism is usually diagnosed at a very early age. 2. Which explanation for autism is no longer considered valid and lacks research support? The sociocultural explanation of autism is not considered valid and is not supported by research. The theory is based on the idea that autism is a result of parents who reject and are cold toward their child; studies are unable to prove this to be true. 3. What forms of treatment are helpful for a person with autism? Treatments are geared towards helping children with autism to behave and communicate in a positive way. Behavioral cognitive therapy being the first and most important therapy, communication and parent training, and community integration are all found to be helpful treatments for autism. 4. List the criteria for a diagnosis of mental retardation: The criteria for diagnosing mental retardation is having an IQ of 70 or below, difficulty with communication, work, safety, home living and self-direction.
