CU2626 Provide Support to Manage Pain and Discomfort 1.1 Holistic pain management and treatment is about seeing and treating pain not only as a physical condition but as an emotional and a spiritual one as well. Physical pain can be experienced as a result of disease or injury, or of some bodily distress. Pain and discomfort can present limitations of functional ability and interfere with quality of life. Holistic Pain Management may focus on aspects such as acupressure, aromatherapy, nutrition, dietary changes, vitamin supplementation, massage, homeopathy, exercise, relaxation, meditation, reflexologys. Having a personalised and holistic approach to pain and discomfort needs good teamwork. Example: when my client once felt pain on her lower back, after discussion with the client and family members, I called up the Nurses at the GP to seek for advice, as my client didn’t want to take any painkillers, and a check-up was necessary to be able to help. 1.2 The most effective approaches to alleviate pain are the wide variety of drugs, they come in four different categories: Analgesics (e.g. aspirin and paracetamol) Opiates (e.g. morphine and heroin) Anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) Anaesthetic blocks (e.g. epidural) Medication would be the primary one, but other methods are often effective. Physical methods, like Physiotherapy is commonly used to reduce chronic pain. Massage, thermo-pad heat packs often provide temporary relief. We bought a heat pad for my client to use when she felt the pain in her back, it helped a lot while sitting. For bedridden patients, pressure redistribution mattresses and repositioning are used to prevent pressure ulcers (bed sores).
