Private Peaceful Essay

In this essay I am analysing the presentation of relationships in the book Private Peaceful which we have been studying in our English class. In paragraph 1, 2 and 3 I am analysing the most important relationship between Charlie Peaceful and Thomas (Tommo) Peaceful then in other paragraphs will be smaller relationships like grandma wolf and the Colonel, Charlie Peaceful and the Colonel and Mrs Peaceful and Big Joe. In the start of the story Charlie looks after Tommo and Tommo looks up to him. In the text the author writes: “So Charlie saves me twice that day... I am so proud of him... I have the bravest brother in the world”. This shows that Charlie looks after Tommo and would take the blame if it meant that his brother wouldn’t be hurt “so Charlie saves” Tommo “twice that day”. Tommo loves and Charlie and he says “I have the bravest brother in the world” when Charlie doesn’t cry out after being caned. This is hyperbole and it shows that Tommo looks up to Charlie. In the middle of the story Charlie and Tommo begin to have a rocky relationship over Molly and star to sort of drift apart. In the novel Tommo says: “I seem to have spent much of my life watching them race ahead of me leaping the high meadow grass... their laughter mingling. When they got too far ahead I sometimes felt they wanted to be without me. I would whine... to let them know I was feeling... abandoned.” This shows that Charlie and Molly are feeling closer to each other when they “race ahead” of Tommo “their laughter mingling”. Tommo felt jealous at Charlie and hurt when “they got too far ahead” and was trying to be noticed when he would “whine... to let them know I was feeling... abandoned”. This is emotive language and it is being used to show how Tommo and Charlie have changed emotionally as they age. In the end of the book Charlie and Tommo drift very far apart but become closer than before
