Nevertheless, it defies every physician’s ethical responsibility as a medical provider. It has been brought to many physicians’ attention that U.S. prison officials have progressively embraced solitary confinement to punish and control difficult or dangerous prisoners. This alone, is enough for many physicians to face a challenge of medical ethics and could eventually jeopardize their license if nothing is done. Over thousands of prisoners spend years locked up 23 to 24 hours a day in small cells that frequently have solid steel doors. It has gotten to the point where mental patients in prisons are handcuffed and regularly shackled every time they leave their cells.
Prison Crowding Written by: Audrey Johnson Overcrowded prisons are a huge issue that has been plaguing the United States for quite a few years now. There is no certain cause for the overcrowding in our prisons, however there are many suspected reasons believed to be causing the overcrowding. In order to really begin fixing the problem, concern must be given to each and every one of these causes. Overcrowding in prisons is a serious issue because it affects millions of people in the U.S., not just prisoners, but taxpayers and prison staff as well. Illinois, in particular, is suffering from overcrowded prisons quite severely.
Our cluttered legal system takes almost a quarter to half time of the individual’s lifetime to conclude a case. The slow, cumbersome and long trials i.e. there are absence of rapid disposal of cases which results in the backlogged courtrooms. The effects of the backlog cases on the court system and the courtroom work group means that the defendants have to wait longer between arrest and trials is inordinately long, in order to get a verdict on their case which also affects the number of conviction rates. Another is poor communication between the courtroom work group, and laboratories about the statuses and updates of cases, and having lack of staff and resources to research and get the job done.
It’s not an issue that just started yesterday or last year, it’s been an issue for many years. In my opinion, it has been an issue since there was a need for the prison system. There has never been enough room/space for people committing crimes. Within the prison system now, prison cells that was made to house one prisoner has been converted to house two with the use of bunk beds. Some prisons have open bays with bunk beds instead of cells.
Correctional Systems Jail is a holding facility for those serving a year or less. Various problems persist in jails, which include the lack of funds, lack of resources, and overcrowding. According to the AMS website (2009), The United States imprison more people than any other nation in the world and are experiencing near-crisis levels of overcrowding. With the rising crime rates and the difficulty in recruiting personnel’s, makes an almost impossible situation. Each of the mention problems go hand-in-hand because of the lack of funds, jails are not able to upgrade to a bigger facility.
With all the federal centers now filled and the federal government not planning to build more, most of the new money is expected to go to private companies or to county governments. Private companies are positioning themselves as suppliers, and are positioned to take the majority of new beds available. As for the administrators of the correction system, each day is a new challenge for them. Corrections officers risk his or her life daily when working in the prisons. As gang violence in prisons continues there is always the chance of riots or hostage situations.
Introduction The problem with respect to overcrowding has tremendously affected the different states in the United States of America. Indeed, there are a number of issues that commonly arise as a result of prison overcrowding. These issues include the worsening of conditions in the prisons such as the decline of basic and sanitation services rendered to the inmates, the spread of diseases, increased stress levels amongst the members of the staff and the inmates as well and finally, the increased risk of violence and riots occurring within the different correctional institutions. The most important issue, however, pertains to the fact that prison overcrowding violates the right of the inmates against unreasonable punishment. It is in this respect that a number of solutions have been proposed to address the problem.
Special Needs Offenders Community Corrections Programs February 2012 Americas over populated prison systems have left many offenders, including special needs offenders, shuffling their way through community sanction programs. Special populations are composed of women, sex offenders, substance abusers, offenders with communicable diseases, mentally ill offenders, and offenders suffering from mental retardation ( Cappella University, 2011). Special needs offenders require proper classification and specialized treatment efforts to promote successful rehabilitation. Unfortunately, this scenario often times fails to transpire. Due to the unique characteristics all six categories of special needs offenders possess, every criminal
Without such activities being available to inmates, their daily routine returns into a monogamous state resulting in boredom. Loomis, a former inmate at Alcatraz Prison, describes the effect of such a lifestyle on inmate behavior: “Life gets so monotonous you feel like bucking the rules to break the monotony,” (Oliver, 66). In addition to idleness repetition, overcrowding also increased the difficulty of imposing discipline, resulting in greater availability of drugs, flourishing gangs, and an increased threat in brutality between prisoners (The Oxford History of the Prison, 237). One of the most fundamental resources of correctional institutions, the correctional officers, are also being vastly outnumbered. The new focus of corrections and society as being “tough on crime” affects the lives in which inmates, officers, and the community must now live by.
