People who feel alienated from mainstream society struggle to keep their individual identity. Chunks of Human beings individual identity are often neglected due to the mainstream society. In spite of how others observe us, our character is how we see ourselves. Knowing we do not fit into the ‘norm’ society, we therefore sustain continuous changes. People who are different from the majority are usually alienated.
Drabble is correct to argue that people tend to ignore truth in order to follow societal standards. In today's world it is often difficult to adjust to one type of lifestyle or another. The constant bombardments of outside opinions hamper our ability to choose and be comfortable with a certain way of living. Therefore, blind conformity is actually a molding of what is said to be normal in society instead of using differences to enhance humans. The malicious acts committed by Malcolm X reflect the idea that people ignore truth to conform to society.
Because of my awareness of racism, I am now bothered by acts and behaviors that might not have bothered me in the past. Before when racial comments were said around me I would somehow ignore it and pretend that nothing was said. By ignoring comments such as these, I was protecting myself. It became sort of a defense mechanism. I never realized I did this, until I was confronted with stories that were found in our discussions by other people of color, who also ignored comments that bothered them.
Our society already possesses the hate, discrimination, racism, prejudice, and religious ridicule it can handle, so why continue to emit these negative and non-productive qualities that can lead this country in a more destructive downfall. America is known to be one of the most dominant countries in the world, so if we ‘lead by example’ how do you think the rest of the world views us?...shouldn’t our “example” exude that of a positive influence? To denounce another human being because they don’t look like you or love someone of the same sex is beyond me. What the LGBT community is asking for is for not for everyone to endorse their lifestyle and mimic them or their situation, but rather to accept the change that’s occurring and to have respect and acknowledgement of their situation which is evidently different from the traditional
America Falling Apart: National Identity & Consumerism In Anthony Burgess’ Is America Falling Apart, Burgess states that America is not where it should be. Our nation for all we portray it to be has many issues, which cannot be easily solved, as they are part of the social fabric that holds us together. If we were to go out and proclaim about the ills that senseless consumerism brings us to our society we would be laughed upon, as we don’t see them as issues, but part of our greater American identity. Americans view consumerism as part of our identity, but our fascination on it does not allow us to appreciate the greater things in life, which play a much more important role in who we are. The United States of America comprises only 4% of the world’s population yet with our few numbers we manage to use around 25% of the world’s oil.
I personally believe that America is in a state of moral decline. Rather than rewarding those who choose to live their lives with a sense of justice and morals, the media glamorizes depreciative choices such as smoking, alcohol and general unjust behavior. This subsequently leads those who chose more conservative lifestyles to feel ostracized. More often that not, when a life of refrain from drugs, sex and partying is portrayed in media, it is in a context of the mundane even going so far as to proclaim that people who choose this lifestyle have no lives. The media definitely has a direct correlation to what is socially acceptable in society.
Throughout the United States of America, racism is a lingering problem that everybody somewhat faces. Even though it may be more apparent in some places than others, racism still has an effect on everyone. It may be a subconscious stereotype or a bad feeling about a certain person solely based on their race that affects individuals in our country. We tend to feel more comfortable in front of people we look and act like rather than strangers who may or may not be different from you. Instead of people feeling safe while walking through the streets they create a sense of worry for themselves by what they believe of others who look different from themselves.
Dehumanizing and derogatory remarks, such as those made by Rob and Arnie, reduce the personhood of all transgendered people and need to come to an end. In order for these cruel remarks to cease, society is going to have to change. As of now some may find people of transgender to be “disgusting” simply because they are different. Until they are seen as human beings not “freaks” harassment will continue. Discrimination has been seen throughout American history.
Stopping racism is essential for the mollification of international relations as well as the way people view each other in any country in the world. While many people don’t like to approach the subject while many others believe all our problems are fixed, racial profiling is a real problem for the people of the world and is necessary for world peace. If racial profiling is not addressed, society will become more biased and colored peoples will never achieve the equality they deserve. ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union, explains that the US has entered a “post racial era”. Every day, people of color are targeted for searches for criminal activity and interrogations without evidence of criminal activity.
ENG 101 Our Identity: Born vs. Influenced Most people do not want to stand out in a crowd, but instead would prefer to blend in with the people around them. When you are raised in America with a name like Firoozeh blending is not so easy. We tend to make friends with people like us because of similar interests and to be around those who accept us as is. Based on weird names, assumptions, and stereotypes these unique people are often overlooked.
