Employees may take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave for qualifying family or medical reasons. Upon returning from leave, the employee may continue the prior job and the prior rate of pay. Reasons for eligible leave are as follows: •the birth of a newborn to an employee and its subsequent care; •complications due to pregnancy of employees unborn child; •placement of an adopted or foster child with the employee; •care of a family member (child, parent, or spouse) who has a serious medical condition; or •employees own serious medical condition which requires the employee to take leave. The mother asked the pre-op nurse how long the procedure would take, because she had to tend to another child and would need to leave for a short while.
Tina’s mother returned to pick her approximately 2 ½ hours later and found that Tina was discharged 30 minutes earlier. Tina’s mother was extremely distraught, security was called, and a “Code Pink” (hospital-wide child abduction alert) was activated. Local law enforcement was also contacted by hospital security. When the security officer interviewed the mother, she shared with him that she and Tina’s father were divorced and that she had full custody of Tina and her siblings. Tina was located within 30 minutes of her mother’s arrival, by local law enforcement, in the care of her father.

Family and Medical Leave Act The Family and Medical Leave Act was instituted in 1993 by the Federal Government for the protection of employees working for companies with more than 50 employees who needed personal time away from their jobs for family or medical emergencies. Prior to this enactment employers could arbitrarily fire or demote employees wishing to spend time with their families during times of hardship. With this act the employee is protected as to job security and the code brings uniformity and fairness to the workplace. In this particular situation the employee asked, and was granted by the former department head, time off from his job due to a medical emergency i.e. employee’s wife had given birth to twin babies prematurely and she needed him to be present.
With this said, a determination needs to be made of why nurses are staying longer then a normally scheduled 12 hour shift. Root Cause Analysis: Staffing shortages will cause a nurse to have to stay over in order to take care of patients. What one might think is being helpful, so they are not working shorthanded, can cause harm just the same . The data for 4E shows numerous occasions of nurses staying well over 12 hours. At this point the nurse is tired and distracted which can lead to error.

They have won numerous prizes over the years for their outstanding work and writing skills. The work the couple published in the novel “Half the Sky” is a series of essays and anecdotes that have been worked together to form one large piece of work. The first half of the novel consists of stories of young women, mostly in developing countries, and the dangers they face during their daily lives. The second half is ideas of particular ways solutions can occur.
