This article goes back and forth in many different aspects as to what and who are considered to be poor. According to actual people their examples of poverty would be a homeless person who has no food or clothing. The government describes poverty to be an American that does have a car, stove, clothes, and televisions, mostly material items. Who is really considered to be poverty stricken? Most households that are poor experience one of these problems: The house is overcrowded, not being able to get medical care, or not being able to eat.
Many living in the city fled prior to the storm, but many believed the reminiscences of the storm wouldn’t be as bad as they thought and they stayed. As a result of New Orleans being below sea level, levees were placed around the city to keep the streets and homes from flooding. When the intensity of winds and mass flooding came from the storm, these levees broke, flooding nearly 80% of New Orleans communities. The Pre-Katrina preparations were a disaster for all communities. Following Hurricane Katrina, outrage was one of the many feelings that survivors experienced.

If people caught hypothermia then it could get worse and they would eventually die. This leads to the fact that the cold weather made it time-consuming for emergency services to rescue people, which made recovery from the disaster much harder. People who were trapped or injured were needed to be rescued, but there were not many emergency services available.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2011), more than 146 million Americans live at or below the poverty level. Fifty-seven percent of all American children live in a home at or below the poverty level. What about the Americans earning just above the poverty level? Twenty-eight percent of all working families were considered to be among the working poor. Individuals and families with a total income over the poverty guidelines are unable to receive government assistance.
The effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans was extremely severe, resulting from one of the most deadly natural disasters in U.S. history. By August 30th, 2005, one day after the Category 4 storm made landfall, about 80 percent of the city of New Orleans, was flooded with some parts of the city under 20 feet of water. The flood was caused by several levees breaches, which most people didn’t believe it could breach, due to a combination of a powerful storm surge, strong winds and excess water in the bodies of water surrounding the city. Families are experiencing traumatic events that cause homelessness. Divorce, cost of living, sickness, drug addiction, PTSD in war victims and mental disabilities are the leading causes of being homeless. Unfortunately in these days and times an everyday occurrence to poor people can cause homelessness. Debilitating illnesses or death can cause people to lose their homes as well. Hurricane Katrina had a major effect on people’s lives; there were thousands of families that lost their homes to that devastating natural cause.
Because over 100,000 people died bodies had to be buried in mass graves. Communication systems and transport routes were damaged by the earthquake so emergency aid was extremely difficult. Workers and survivors alike became angry at this lack of aid and looting and riots broke out in many areas. Aftershocks are still occurring reaching up to 5.9 on the Richter scale. Even though the process is slow Haiti is recovering many charities have been set up to provide emergency housing, food and other areas of the recovery.
Haiti in 2012 Half a million Haitians are still homeless and are living under tarps and tents. Most Haitians do not have running water, toilet facilities or access to a doctor. More than 70% of the working force is unemployed. Haiti faces challenges- political disputes, chaotic housing projects, conflict over land and registry. But there have been advances.
