According to the Brenau University Handbook (2012), plagiarism is defined as “the act of taking the words or ideas of another and representing them as one’s own” (p. 2). There are two types of plagiarism, intentional or unintentional. An example of unintentional plagiarism could be as simple as copying a picture from a website to enhance your research paper without giving the proper credit. Intentional plagiarism, on the other hand, is buying or taking a research paper off the internet and handing it in as your own assignment. In the student handbook, Brenau University provides the punishment for intentional and unintentional plagiarism in detail. According to the Brenau University Handbook (2012), the punishments for intentionally or unintentionally plagiarizing as a Brenau student are the following: • Professor will file an Academic Dishonesty Incident Report with the Vice President for Academic Affairs • Professor and/or faculty will follow the following sanctions: o For first offense, a grade of zero will be given for the assignment o For second offense, a grade of “F” will be given for the course in which the plagiarism took place o For third offense, the student will be expelled from Brenau University (p.2). Studies have found that students, who successfully plagiarize in the academic world, take those negative ethical behaviors into the business world. Martin and Sloan (2009) explained that students expect people in the business world not to act unethically (p. 40). However, they seem to believe that the only way to advance in the business world is by unethical behavior or mannerisms. So the unethical behavior or mannerisms that were learned in college are carried over to the business world.
