The Pit Dogs have been used for just about everything throughout history. They are known as man’s best friend, but man has misused dogs, forcing them to perform cruel acts. Misuse of pit bull dogs has created a harsh and misunderstood perspective of the breed. Pit bulls date back to the 18th century, when dogs were generally categorized by the jobs they performed rather than by appearance. Pit bulls were created to work as farm dogs. The pit bull terrier was a crossbreed between a terrier, which was typically any dog that dug for vermin, and the bulldog, which was a dog that caught errant cattle. Pits were starting to be trained as combatants, leading to the popular opinion that the dogs themselves were violent. Throughout the next two decades, stories about vicious pits mauling innocent children appeared in news outlets across the country, drawing the curtain on having a family-friendly reputation. (Tullis, 2013) What it takes to make a pit dangerous is the same as almost any other dog. Usually, this dangerousness is due to mistreatment. When a dog feels threatened, becomes frightened, or has been encouraged to be aggressive and then draws blood, the tendency is to focus on the animal alone. Somehow society has been brought up into believing it is solely the dogs fault, nobody ever takes the owner into consideration. A person would have to be very hard-headed and stubborn to believe that pit bulls are vicious dogs. Pit bulls are just like any other dog, they can be nice and very loyal if you treat them properly. In a way, treating anything poorly will get negative results. The media has focused on pit bulls, and blame the dog for anything that it does. Blaming the dog is not the problem, the real problem is the owner. Not only has the media focus on just pit bull attacks, they leave out why the attack even happened. There are other dogs that attack people, some are even statistically more likely to attack a person than the pit bull. There are now people starting to realize the bad rap that pit bulls are receiving, and they are starting to take action. People should be able to own a pit bull without having to follow a whole bunch of regulations and
