If you saw a Pit Bull being walked by its owner at your local park, how would you react? Would you cringe at the thought of the monstrous thing and stay out of its way, or would you be compelled to ask if you may pet this wonderful, misunderstood creature? The general public would be afraid of the dog. However, the properly educated portion of the human race knows better than to conform to popular belief and succumb to the mass hysteria regarding this breed without first doing research of their own. Most people shudder at the thought or sight of a Pit Bull and consider them vicious atrocities, but I will show that Pit Bulls are innocent and really are just misunderstood.
Pit Bull’s Aggression; Nurtured or Innate? Pit Bulls have a fearsome reputation as killers, attack dogs and receive a lot of negative reactions from the press and the general public. A lot of these connotations may be true in some cases but it is primarily the owner’s fault that their dogs behave as they do. The word "vicious" functions to vindicate the breed and cause a lot of negative reactions from the press and the general public. The phrase; “bred to kill” and “aggressive killer” are thrown around without hesitation from those that are not familiar with the breed.
Once the trend got publicly known, it became a huge deal in the media. At this point people think that the pit bull is a mean, aggressive, man-eating breed. Cops, landlords, and the general public began banning this breed because of humans training them to attack. When I was 5 years old, I witnessed my sister being attacked by my grandmothers Scottish terrier. This is a small, nonaggressive dog.
A lot of young people like pit-bulls because of protection, but some use this animal in another nature. Young adults may use this dog to fight other dogs or to make their money illegally. Pit-bulls have a cross breed which includes bulldogs and a variety of terriers. Pit-bulls were introduced in the 19th century, and there cross breed made them come popular over the years up until now. Some people label a pit-bull to be the most dangerous and violent dog there is to be, but others think pit-bulls are one of the best guard dogs there is.
Pit bulls were imported to America from England in the 1870’s primarily, but not exclusively, for pit fighting. Over the years dog fighting has become a huge issue in the united states and many individuals frown upon it nowadays; because Pit bulls were the number one dogs used for dog fighting, many people believe that this particular breed is the most dangerous of all breeds. In this proposal we are going to focus on the history/misconceptions of Pit bulls, and how we can lessen the fear in people and ourselves when it comes to this particular breed. From the very start Pit bulls never really had the chance to defend themselves. When brought up in the world they were taught to become baiting dogs.
An example of this is that he thinks Candy’s dog should be shot because it’s old and smelly. He also thinks that Candy could have one of Slim’s puppies instead. However he can’t see that Candy might have an emotional attachment to his dog. For me this suggests that Carlson is insensitive and doesn’t care about anyone other than himself and he believes that he should always get what he wants. Another reason
Michelle Buchanan Dr. Melinda McBee English 1301.004 13 April 2010 Buchanan, Michelle L. “Special Kind of Dogs.” Abstract With previous experience I have come to find myself very close to pit bulls. I have a special place in my heart for all these dogs because they don’t get treated right or they get raised to think that fighting is the key. Pit bulls may seem like mean dogs, but it is all in how you raise them. These dogs only show what they have been taught and if they have been taught to fight then they will fight. If you teach them that all people are nice and you teach them to be nice, then you will have a really well mannered dog.
If these are the morals and values that we uphold as Americans why do we not grant the same rights to mans best friend? In recent history several dog breeds have come under fire from the media and have been subject to legislation outlawing particular breeds, which means that individual dogs that have never done any wrong or harmed a human are being punished. Dog breeds including Pit bulls,
The cousin who runs the risk of tarnishing the reputation of every member of the family, even the well-meaning ones. The cousin whose branch you wish you could chop from the family tree” (MillBusters). Puppy mills should be shut down because they are immoral, harmful, and possibly deadly to innocent dogs. Puppy mills have been around for hundreds of years and have dated back to the 1940’s (PetMeds).
That hero is Atticus, who fights for racial justice. Atticus seems like a sort of “Superman” in the county of Maycomb, as he does many things that other people don’t want to do or can’t do. For instance he is the one who has to take care of a mad dog who is loose on the streets, and he guns it down in one shot. People call Atticus names because he is not racist, and his daughter Scout retaliates against them. “Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more.” (99) Scout thinks.
