Sally Remson Critical Thinking I enjoy reading Petula Dvorak's articles in The Washington Post because she always show me a new way to look at what her topic is. I may not agree with what she has written, however she does make me look at it differently. On January 29, 2015, she published Stop Blaming U-Va. sorority sisters and other women for the campus rape problem, an article about one of the reactions to the UVA fraternity rape case. I am a proud member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity (yes it is a sorority, however our charter is as a fraternity), and what Ms. Dvorak wrote about was the decision of other sororities in order to prevent such actions from happening again. At UVA, sorority sisters were ordered by national chapters to avoid fraternity events the weekend of January 29, instead were organizing "sisterhood events" and requiring stay-inside retreats. Ms. Dvorak compares this ruling to the long-heard-about chastity belt from medieval times. She has a point. Can this problem gotten rid of by simply keeping the sexes separated? This may be true, but isn't doing this basically laying the blame on those unfortunate women who have been raped? After all, if they had not gone out, not gone off by themselves around males, they could have prevented their rape. My freshman year, I attended Sweet Briar…show more content…
She highlights Matt Leibowitz's ongoing look into the sexual abuse which occurs too frequently in the Greek system. Leibowitz talks to current Greek students at different schools, talking about the accusations and occurrences of rape. One of the items he mentioned is the fact that after drinking, many members (both male and female) wake up the next morning with "deep regret".
