Personal Narrative Essay: The Morgan Street Plum War

Back when I was younger, I’d say from the age of 2 until about 13, we lived in the house on the corner with a giant plum tree in the backyard. My grandma owned the house two doors down, my cousins Mickie, Dannie and Cam were kitty corner to us and my other cousins, Penny & Tarin, lived in the house directly across the street. Our plum tree was great for climbing, swinging the tire swing, shading our barbeques and so many other wonderful adventures dreamed up by my sister and me. The one thing it was not great for was plums. They made such a mess. They would fall from the tree to the ground below and squish into the ground as they ripened. Everything was perfect, I was getting my chores done and having fun at the same time. Life was pretty good at that particular moment; everyone would agree that this was the best idea of the day, everyone except my parents of course. Just as the home team was about to claim victory in the Morgan Street plum war of the century, It happened. No one knew which one of us actually threw the fatal plum into the air, several of us had let go of our fruit bombs at the same time and they collided in mid air, right above an approaching vehicle, landing on my parent’s vehicle. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed the kids in the neighborhood disappear so quickly before, leaving only Shelli and I to explain our logic. As you can imagine, I was not successful in explaining how my interpretation of their instructions included a neighborhood plum fight. For the next two days, every kid in the neighborhood was cleaning up plum guts off of cars, houses, bushes, street signs, sidewalks, fences and even the swimming pool in the backyard behind our house.
